Download a different player. MX Player will play pretty much anything.

A. Dietz says:
The movie needs to be in MP4 or VP8 format to play with the video player on the Kindle Fire HD. You'll also play it through the Personal Video app, they won't show up on the video tab. You can Google "Convert avi to MP4" to find software that will do the conversion for you or you can download or sideload a player as G. suggested that will play avi files.

Orchid Sez says:
1. Convert your video to MP4 format.
2. Connect Kindle Fire to PC/MAC.
3. Drag and drop MP4 from PC/MAC into Videos folder of Kindle Fire.
4. Disconnect Kindle Fire and turn it off - it will reset itself.
5. Switch it back on and open APPs folder on Kindle Fire
6. Search for your video and it should be there.
7. Good luck :)

Denis Powell says:
I've installed "VLC for Kindle" from the App Store and that plays most movie formats and saves you the bother of converting files.

You can, while watching change aspect ratios and fill the screen. I think it's a very useful app indeed.

Mr L Randell says:
will Fire HD play m4v that are not right protected? IE: Copied DVD using 3rd party converter. In my file folder it shows as just MP4. Any help please

Denis Powell says:
Why not try it and see. You can always delete it if it doesn't play, or install VLC as that will play almost anything.

VLC player comes with worrying warnings as a Beta program, cannot see any straightforward version

G. Wheeler says:
The full version of VLC Media Player is excellent but this Beta version for Kindle Fire HD/Android does not play high definition (1080p) MKV files properly, the picture constantly breaks up. To give it credit, it does warn "this version is NOT STABLE!".

Can you play movies downloaded from itunes on a kindle ?

I moved MP4 Movies from computer to Kindle - they play but they display as black squares - must hold finger down and ask for details - movies titles are missing from view - bummer as I was loading quite a few to travel with. Anyone know how to get the titles to show up?

In reply to an earlier post on 12 Jun 2013 07:03:55 BDT
Denis Powell says:
If you install an app such as ES File Explorer (which works like Windows Explorer) you can display all titles in the Movies Folder and can open them from there.

GREAT Tip! I downloaded it and there they were - titles and yes I can play them from the explorer filing tree just like I use at work. PERFECT. Thanks!

I'm glad it's solved your problem. I've tried several other apps but keep coming back to VLC because it allows me to change the picture ratio. I use it on my Laptop too for some older videos that won't play in Windows Media Player.

I have sent a movie from my PC to kindle but it is not showing on my VLC app ?
Other movies from AVI files have - do I need to convert this to AVI ?

In reply to an earlier post on 11 Jul 2013 12:28:07 BDT
Denis Powell says:
It depends on the file format. If you're going to change it to anything I'd suggest mp4 as that's supported by the Fires own movie player and it will show in the Personal Video app.

To locate the movie you've already loaded use a File Explorer app such as ES File Explorer, which works just like Windows Explorer.
