Downloaded apps like the BBC news are upside down in portrait mode and do not auto rotate. I have determined the correct way up in portrait is according to the way the cover on the case opens.

Turn Fire through 180 degress to fix problem.
Do you have screen lock on?

Simon Ghent says:
Or turn head through 180 degrees. This also fixes the problem. Though it may lead to others.

Thanks, I'll investigate the screen lock. The reason why it appears upside down is because of the 39.99 leather cover Waterstones have provided; I have just discovered it holds the kindle wrong way round, (the charging ports are hidden by the cover when closed).

Some applications will auto rotate in any direction others seem fixed (like the BBC news for example).

Might it not be the case that you've inserted the kindle fire into the case the wrong way round?!

No its not a wind up - it has a lithium ion batterry.

I've just spoken with the Waterstones help desk. My assumption is correct some apps do not auto rotate and therefore with the design of cover it will appear upside down. The only remedy is to psychically rotate the whole thing and accept having an upside down cover (which has words embossed on the cover).

The kindle will only fit one way because the plastic moulding has cut outs for the charger / computer slots etc.

Sounds bizarre. If correct, I'd ask Waterstones for a different cover. You'll never be entirely content with things as they are.

Damaskcat says:
What's important? The cover or the screen? I' say the screen - just ignore the fact that it appears to be upside down.

R. Robinson says:
Waterstones have agreed that this particular cover (like many others) does create this problem and have offered me an exchange.

The 'Amazon' (36) cover works correctly, however it gets a lot of criticism for collapsing when being used as a stand.

The Waterstones cover on the other hand does provide a really secure base when used as a stand.

Now I've understood the problem - I'll probably stick with it and just rotate it when needed on the other hand I may change it.

Damaskcat says:
Well exactly - there are advantages and disadvantages to every type of cover.

R. Robinson says:
You are right on the Waterstones case in big letters is inscribed "In Books We Trust".

Personally I think the idiom "Don't Judge a Book by its cover" would be more appropriate......

After seeing the exact requirements of the Kindle Fire HD and the way the taxes work, I'm not surprised that there are barely any apps around.

Ms T. Farrow says:
My news ap does exactly the same. I have a cover and it is definitely the right way round because the buttons fit in the gaps (if that makes sense!) The ap opens upside down and I can only view it by rotating the whole kindle which is annoying. All other apps/ games open fine. Grr!
