We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite which can be found here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=201063560

The software update will be delivered wirelessly and includes general improvements for your Kindle Paperwhite.

This update automatically downloads and installs for Kindle Paperwhite customers; however, you can also manually download the software and update your device via USB cable.

If you have any questions or need help with this update, please contact Kindle Support by clicking the Contact Us button on the right side of any Amazon.co.uk help page

Denis Powell says:
It can take many weeks for Amazon to roll out an update. Think of it as similar to an email that they send to each individual device. Due to the large size of the file and that they may have millions to send they probably send a certain number each day.

It is, however, very simple to do it manually. From the website, download the File to your computer, connect your Paperwhite by USB, drag and drop the update onto the Kindle, eject, go to the home screen, tap Menu, then Settings, then Menu again and you'll see the option to update. Tap that and the job's done.

Dear Amazon, I want to purchase real books and have the option to add the Kindle version for a small extra charge - say 1. When will I be able to do that?

you might want to ask Amazon and not a forum of kindle users...

The ebooks are not like paper books they remain the property of the publisher and all Amazon can sell is a leasehold to read them. Contact the publishers, they are the ones in control in this case.

Denis Powell says:
G. Weinstein, that's a little like buying a cinema ticket and expecting to always get a DVD of the film for 1. No reason why it can't happen, like buying a chicken in Tesco and getting another one free but it's very unlikely to become the norm.

I think increasing numbers of people no longer want paper books and you'll see a number of posters who would have bought, say, a dozen or so paper books a year who've acquired many hundreds of ebooks for less money since buying readers. The market is changing. I often save as much as 10 by buying the eBook instead of the paperback so I'm reading many more books than I used to but spending less money.

'like buying a chicken in Tesco and getting another one free'

I think the latest offer is buy a chicken, get a free horse, Denis. ;o)

I'm assuming we have all been eating it for years I have no problem eating horse, it's the lack of control on the food chain I find disturbing. Who knows what knackers yard they came from and what drugs they had been pumped full of before they died. I am also assuming if they were getting away with horse what else have we been eating? Badger, fox vole?

Tigger's Mum says:
The worse thing I ever saw was a documentary showing a building with a rough concrete floor with heaps of chicken breast portions supposedly for pet food, out of date and on the point of going bad, being shovelled up by a mechanical digger then the meat was washed and treated and recycled back to be sold for human consumption on markets in the UK. Unbelievable. Like Denis I only eat food I prepare myself or eat out where I trust the cooking.

ChrisJ says:
I had a holiday job working in a chicken factory.... live chickens in at one door and all neatly packaged up and shipped out at the other end.
Working on the various production lines (kill, pluck, hang up, draw and quarter, etc). Each one is told: anything that looks good and healthy and better value: that goes on the Marks and Spencer line. The scraggly remains: on the "everyone else" line.

Tigger's Mum says:
That's fine when they are good and fresh but it was the 'reincarnated' ones that turned my stomach and the lack of any semblance of hygiene with digger buckets and dirty floors. One would like to think that food prep areas are clean.

Is this update likely to be available sometime on the basic Kindle (i.e. the 69 one)?

Posted on 17 Mar 2013 23:20:04 GMT
I'm sure we'll find out eventually but would anyone care to tell us what's in this update? Amazon's OP doesn't tell us and neither does their update page.

@ CB /Denis and anyone else who has updated would you say the update is any improvement as some comments were made that you thought it seemed slower afterwards.

I'll have to check with Mr CBR when I get home - he's the one who uses it.

Denis Powell says:
The initial slowness seems to have disappeared now. It wasn't a significant difference anyway and certainly didn't bother me.

Thank you, I 'll upgrade when I get home. I'm using my old Kindle on holiday but do regret leaving the Paperwhite at home.

Does this up date deal with the uneven/colour affected light issues that some of the customer reviews complain of? If I buy a 'paper white' now is this up date already on the Kindle?
thks
