Seeing as the screensaver only appears when you are not using it, is it worth getting annoyed with it? Try the mobile read forums, they are the ones who work on jailbreaks on kindles. X

i have kindles since 2010 and i love the amazon screensavers, so yes it is worth getting annoyed about it,considering when i bought the kindle paperwhite waterstones never asked if i wanted their screensaver or even said you will get our screensaver and it will block amazons screensavers completely. i have since rung amazon and they are looking into as they were unaware of the problem as well.

"At yesterday's IPG event, Daunt revealed a few more details about Waterstones' Amazon partnership. "Waterstones-specific Kindle screensavers, bestseller lists and a Read For Free offer are among the plans," The Bookseller reports.

The Read For Free program is presumably similar to Barnes & Noble's "Read In Store" program, which lets Nook owners read Nook books free in B&N stores for up to an hour a day. A Waterstones spokesman told me that the books available to read free in-store are dependent on publisher negotiations and that the amount of free reading time is yet to be decided."

So you might get a few perks along with the pain.

I guess the only option for now is to reset the device, register it and turn off the Wi-Fi. That way you are safe and the default screensavers are not blocked by the annoying Waterstones one.

Hopefully Amazon will address the issue promptly and get rid of it.

Damaskcat says:
Why would Amazon address this non-issue? It only applies to Kindles purchased from Waterstones. If you don't want that screensaver buy a Kindle from Amazon!!!

I think if those of us who did buy from waterstones knew we would have our amazon screen savers wiped,we would not have bought from waterstones, but considering it was not told to anyone on buying our kindles or even advertised in the actual shop, none of us were aware this was going to happen. Also if amazon had the kindle PW in stock which it wasn't until mid dec, then I would of bought from amazon. It is an amazon issue because its an amazon product, look at the back of the kindle,it says amazon, you obviously don't have a kindle.

I bought mine from Waterstones to avoid waiting a month for delivery. To be honest the change in screensaver doesn't really bother me, after all you only see if when you are not using it. I used to enjoy some of the old photographs though, they were pretty stylish.

Really? I bought from Waterstones because the Amazon delivery date was more than a month away. Why on earth are you bothered about what picture is displayed when you're not using the thing?

Sheesh, some people love to complain!

I am using it,it was an early Xmas present to decide if I liked it as much as my older kindle or if it was better. I also got mine because of the wait with amazon and to avoid courier loss.

An update:

Just spoke with the Customer service. They checked my account for any subscriptions or special offers. Of course there were none. They are wondering how come I am getting this Waterstones screensaver without any subscription.

Amazon engineers are aware of the issue and currently looking into it. However with no estimated resolution date at present.

Will chase the up again next week for an update as I am sure they will not contact me.

Would advise everyone affected to call them up so they realise the impact of the issue.

Lucy Lou says:
The "impact of the issue" ? Really? Heaven forbid if you had a real issue to contend with. It's a screensaver. For when you're not using it.

The standard screensaver has been replaced by a Waterstones one.

That should go straight to the top of the pile.

I think it's a shame that some choose to mock those who are annoyed by the Waterstones Sleep Screen issue. I bought my PW from Amazon so I'm not directly affected, but I know how I'd feel if I'd been duped in this way.

Yes, ok, it does the job required so you can read e-books. But for some, and I include myself, ownership of an expensive Kindle is far more than that. It is the total package and the feel-good factor that comes with it. What Waterstones have offered is less than the total package that Kindle owners have come to expect. If I had one of them, I would feel cheated too.

Dave.

Well said David. Am I right in thinking that Amazon charge less in the US for Kindles with advertising?

You're making a mountain out of a molehill and those who have stated that it "gets on my nerves" and have said "realise the impact" needs a reality check.

No one has been "duped". No one has been "cheated". To say so is just ridiculous.

Now I have read this thread I shall stop looking to see if my local Waterstones has stock everyday! I shall be patient and wait untill December for the one I've ordered directly from Amazon. I can't see it effecting the Kindle or the fact that I want it, but given the choice I'd rather not have Waterstones adverts. Thanks for the info!!!!

Posted on 14 Nov 2012 14:40:51 GMT
To "Clagg":

And how come we have not been cheated or duped according to you?

Is it not cheating for not informing the end user that the default screensavers will be blocked bearing in mind that for the very same product with adverts the price in the US is lower than what we have paid in the UK (knowing that in the UK the advert version of Kindle will not be offered)?!

I suggest you need a reality check or just do not make such comments in the future!

It's not a huge issue to my mind. People seem to be reacting as though they've been mugged or had their houses broken into. Mild annoyance would be my reaction in the same situation.
