it won't - it will only see the Kindle when it's connected via the usb cord

The PC can certainly "see" the Kindle on the network.
But it can't connect to it or do anything with it. It can run an application to monitor all network traffic going to the Kindle, if that is what you want to do, but the Kindle is not running any piece of software that allows another device to connect to it and inspect its folders over the wifi connection.

many thanks. that's a huge kindle limitation!

CBRetriever says:
it may be the same with all Android devices, so it may be an Android limitation

If you think that is the case, then do NOT buy a Kindle.
There are lots of other lovely tablets that you CAN connect to over WiFi if that is a requirement of yours.

unfortunately I already purchased the Kindle. !! as said : problems with WiFi, problems with usb. no support from Amazon. they send a message stating : connect to to get driver for usb . the site doesn't exist!! there is no support for windows 7 or 8.

there are no drivers for any kindles - they are not necessary

I had a problem connecting my Fire via usb the other day and all it took was a reboot of my laptop and it saw the kindle as a Drive/Auxiliary Device on the laptop itself (as though it were an external hard drive) - normally it connects with no problems with Vista and Win7

As I understand it, for a PC to access (as opposed to just "see") another device on a network requires the other device to be running Microsoft file and folder sharing at the very least. In addition to that, if names are to be used for connection some form of DNS client would be necessary. This gives you name to IP address conversion. It is possible in the wireless world this name to IP address is achieved by the wireless router. Finally, once you are connected, there would need to be an equivalent to Windows file and folder permissions. It is difficult enough getting Windows to talk to Unix / Linux!

I could be wrong but I think Androids are lacking just about all of those things I mentioned. That isn't a criticism: they're just not designed to connect in any way other than USB. You could try from a Windows command prompt typing in \\IP Address of destination and see what you get. I don't know how you would do this from an Android, except maybe via the web browser? We would then need a discussion on protocols and ports.

I don't claim to be an expert but do work as a systems admin (Microsoft and Cisco qualified).
