Just Send Me Word: A True Story of Love and Survival in the Gulag

I thought this sounded really interesting but am now thoroughly put off! I can't for the life of me think why publishers think this is a good idea. If I can wait for it to be cheaper maybe I just won't bother buying it at all.....

Why not?

If you want it now and want to pay slightly less buy the hardback - if you want to wait until the paperback comes out when the e-book is likely to come down in price then do so. How would you have felt if Amazon had been charging the full RP of 20 for the hardback?

1 I have plenty of other books I can read instead
2 I have no money to waste

If Amazon charged 20 for the hardback I wouldn't care - I still wouldn't buy it though. Like I say, I don't have money to waste.

Wow - the first time I ever post and a very rude person replies....

You express an opinion - people don't agree with you.

Buy/don't buy - your choice. If you really feel aggrieved about it tell the publisher. No one promised you e-books would be cheaper than paper versions.

Ok I get the picture. No-one is interested.

It's not that we're not interested, RC, we just don't agree with your point. I'm usually a fairly impulse-buy kinda girl, but if I know I won't want to be bothered to wait for the price to come down, then I also know I probably never really wanted it in the first place. But if I can get it in another format, and at a cheaper price that's reasonable - I'll probably just get it after all.

Who is this rude person by the way? I wish they'd reply to me :(

Thanks Wilbur; I was trying to inject a little humour, lighten the tone a little.

It's worth taking into account that the ebook price is common to all UK sites so, for instance, Kobo also charge 11.99 but that includes VAT at 20% which makes the actual ebook price 9.99 plus VAT. The Hardback price is 11.20 so more expensive than the ebook equivalent when you take out the VAT element.

Now, Amazon only charge 3% VAT but if they were allowed by the publisher to add that to 9.99 they'd be undercutting Kobo. Now, that may not be a bad thing, but it could easily give Amazon a virtual monopoly on the sale of eBooks within the UK. Look what supermarket prices of paper books, amongst other things, has done to the number of high street bookstores over the last 30 years. Other than W.H. Smiths there isn't one book store in the county of Caerphilly, where I live, and many people have to travel at least 15 miles to get to that, and it has nothing like the range of books you'll find in even a small Waterstones. Lower prices can have adverse effects too.

Sometimes we don't appreciate what we have until it's gone.

The hardback only came out today. As usual the price of the kindle edition will fall once the paperback comes out. This could be up to a year after the hardback.
At present you cannot even forward order the paperback, because there is no date given. Why not complain about that - at least you can buy the kindle edition.

This subject has been done to death and is beyond tedious.

You really cannot compare a paperback price when its not out until next year!

And you don't think that 9.89 for what will be a 8-month old book in paperback form isn't a bigger rip-off than 11.99 for the Kindle version on the day it comes out???

So you can pre-order the paperback now and get it in January 2013. Or you could get the hardback or kindle book now. If you wait until January 2013, the kindle book will most probably come down in price to around the paperback price. You pay a premium for wanting it before January 2013 - publishers and authors have to make their money somehow. Buy it if you think the price is reasonable, don't buy it if you don't, or borrow it from the library when they have it in stock in a few years' time. You obviously don't want the book that much.

If you had done a search you would have found many, many threads about Kindle prices vs treebook prices. If you had even taken the time to LOOK at the FIRST page of threads, you would have found at LEAST two _current_ threads addressing this issue. You clearly didn't bother, and instead just had a whine. I'm afraid my tolerance for people who can't even be bothered to do a cursory check to see if there is an answer to their complaint is at an all time low.

If people want to post a rant - which is basically what the OP is - an ill-informed rant at that - then why would they expect a sympathetic response? Especially as a few seconds glancing down the discussion titles would ahve revealed this is a regular subject. There are several people who always post rational polite explanations - are you saying they shouldn't do this?
