NEPH says:
Amazon is to step up its assault on the UK's retail market by delivering parcels to nearly 5,000 corner shops and newsagents around the country.

The online shopping giant has quietly started trialling the scheme on a small scale with items such as books and clothes, and plans to roll it out nationwide.

Amazon has already built itself into a $109bn business by offering customers a highly convenient way to shop and this move will give it even more muscle with which to take on high street stores.

Consumers will be able to collect their orders from local shops that are often open until late into the night, instead of having to wait in for orders or coming home to find a delivery note telling them to collect their parcel from the nearest Royal Mail depot.

It's how their return system works with Kindle.
Print a label, parcel it up and drop it in a designated Spar (or other) in your locality.

It really is ironic - the on-line market has wiped out so many high street businesses. Now the Grand Wizard of Internet buying is using what's left on the high street to assist them with delivery. It's like barmaids eating their young.

Damaskcat says:
If you feel the situation is like that - why do you use an internet site at all? Or do you not shop on Amazon? I always think it's a little odd when people complain about on-line retailers devastating the high street by posting comments about it on an online retailer's site.

Isabella says:
Don't know the cause, of course, (granny just died, business down to standing waiting for Amazon parcels?) but when I went into a local shop to 'post' a faulty Amazon purchase, the shopkeeper could have curdled milk for a living just by looking... He didn't actually say anything, just made a sort of grunt or two. Good service from Amazon but I won't be rushing back there. I even bought a paper and a bottle of water so I wasn't just using the return service.

BookBoy says:
Only if you live in the trial area though. I think its a good idea, I use other retailers that do the same and it must be good for many people.

Where I am, if you need to return something to Amazon, its the post office for small items or Yodel do a pick up for larger or higher value items. Not always convenient.
