kindle fire HD - wifi issue

I' having a problem with wifi. I got my fire HD yesterday and all was well. I trying to access a public wifi service (which worked OK earlier today), Under the wireless tab it shows it as connected to the service (BtOpenzone, I'm in the UK) but the wireless symbol on the top of the screen has a cross on it -and I can't access anything on the Web. any ideas?

This might sound silly - but are you connecting to your own wifi network, or were you in a pub or shop with free wifi yesterday?

Wifi has a limited range, usually about 50 feet from the access point, so you can't connect to a free wifi service somewhere, come home and expect it to work there.

Another option is to check to make sure your wifi is turned on. A cross through it sounds like wifi is turned off, or the network you're trying to connect to isn't in range

Try disconnecting and making it forget the wifi password, and then enter it again. Someone on another thread said they had a similar issue and moving closer to the router made the Fire pick it up again. You could also try holding the power button for 20 seconds, which will restart the tablet.

Just got my Kindle Fire HD it will not connect to my router all my other devices work fine ipad,iphone laptops but not the kindle fire. It will connect to my iphone if i use my personnel hot spot but niether of my two routers. Scourered the internet to no gain.
Any ideas dont want to buy a new router if thats not the problem.
Kindle help is useless on amazon

Just going to point out that the Kindle Fire HD actually has a "Help & Feedback" page when you drag your finger down from the top of the screen, and in there is a section on if your device does not connect.

The following is a direct quotation from that section:
"...If your Kindle is able to connect to your router, but unable to connect to the Internet (signified by a white X over the Wi-Fi icon), try restarting both your Kindle and your router. If you are still unable to connect to the Internet, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP), the person who set up your Wi-Fi network, or the manufacturer of your Wi-Fi router for help."

A. Veasey What possessed you to purchase a Kindle Fire HD when you have no personal Wi-Fi? If you have the Internet, and connect on a computer via an ethernet cable, you can simply purchase a wireless router from any good electronics/computer retail outlet. It's your own fault and Amazon aren't going to be able to help you with this one, I'm afraid. Might as well just buy a cheap router (can get them for about £15) if you're going to be the only one using it. Love that they suggested you go and sit in McDonalds though!

bought the kindle HD fire, trying to set up e mail, googlemail and hotmail accounts posed no problem but can't get my ntlworld mail account mail. Laptop in the house works fine in obtaining it , any suggestions

Try changing the channel on the router. I did and it worked for me. Also I've found that my wireless mouse affects the signal to the Kindle.

I'm having this problem with the small white cross on my son's Fire HD too... It is intermittent sometimes we have Wi Fi for a day or two then I lose it for an hour, a day a week..then it unexpectedly reappears again for a while. I have a very good signal and other wi fi devices have no issues (including my iPad)... I've rebooted the Router, reset the Fire to factory settings (which restored the wi-fi for a bit).. My son uses this for an online game he plays with his friends and it is very frustrating when this cuts out.. I've read on other forums that Amazon UK are not even admitting that there is anything wrong with help line staff seemingly unaware but judging by the number of these forums I suspect i'm not the only one.. Does any one have any solutions that do not involve rebooting anything or changing settings... (as I've tried pretty much all of them)

I just had the same problem today with a kindle fire. It worked fine out of the box on a Wifi router at one address and then failed at another - in fact it caused the router to shut down and require a restart (to shut down again!). I changed the router at the second address for one like at the first address and it immediately works. So it seems to be a problem when used in conjunction with a particular type/model of router.
For the record, the routers which worked were both BT Homehub 2.0.
The one that didn't work was a Siemens router badged Tiscali -
Siemens Gigaset SE587 WLAN dsl
Driver Version: 1.75
API Version: GS_API_626
Firmware Version: E.25.41.18 A

I am still investigating (not very successfully) whether there is a specific setting in the Siemens router (which is marked UK use only) that is causing the problem.

I know this does not identify the cause but it may throw up some common factors with others' problems and indicate a possible circumventory solution.
