We have a new, free software update available for Kindle, which can be found here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=200781270

The software update will be delivered wirelessly and includes optimisations for your Kindle's performance. This update automatically downloads and installs for Kindle customers; however, you can also manually download the software and update your device via USB cable.

With the new software update, Kindle customers can avail of Read for Free in Waterstones stores in the UK. For more information on Read for Free, visit

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=201070150

Will this be pushed to devices? I tried to update my new Kindle 4 but the "update now" box is greyed out.

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jan 2013 10:11:05 GMT
Denis Powell says:
It will be pushed out but probably over several weeks or even months depending on how many have been sold.

The first link I gave explains how to install it manually. Once the file is in the root folder of your Kindle the "Update Now" line will be "live".

CBRetriever says:
the update now button is only used when you sideload a file manually - it's never active unless it sees that file sitting there

Bit confused as to what this is. Is it simply a free wifi connection when in a Waterstones. The aim being they try to sell particular ebooks and you can read these for up to an hour if you stay in the shop. You lose it once you leave the shop. If you buy the ebook are you buying off Amazon or Waterstones? Not sure what each company get out of it. Sorry to be confused.

CBRetriever says:
interestingly enough - this is something y'all get that amazon.com customers don't - we get the same update, sans the Waterstones bit

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jan 2013 13:42:57 GMT
Denis Powell says:
Lisa, you get free wifi in Waterstones even without this update. I've been using my Paperwhite that way for a while.

The link I gave above gives details, but you're buying your ebooks from Amazon.

Lisa says:
Thanks Denis. I read it but don't quite get it. If I had my head in my kindle I wouldn't be looking at the book shelves. What do Waterstones get out of it?

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jan 2013 13:58:50 GMT
Denis Powell says:
You're in through the door for one thing and you might buy a paper book or "toy" while you're there.

It may well attract some new customers, but I assume Waterstones will get a small commission on any sales through their portal.

My waterstones has a coffe shop, so i can see myself sitting down with a cup and trying a book for an hour. They normally let you read tree books while drinking, then you either buy or put back.

Lisa says:
Wish mine had a coffee shop.

They closed our Waterstones down. Can't honestly say I miss it.

I've successfully downloaded and installed it but, except for the mention of of the Waterstone free reading and a vague reference to optimization, there don't seem to be any release notes. Does anyone know what Kindle "optimization" means in practice?

CBRetriever says:
a generic way of saying we fixed/improved something but we're not going to tell you waht?

Amazon usually doesn't say, unless it's something like the Waterstones deal

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jan 2013 19:35:55 GMT
Berzelius says:
Quite probably. It may actually be a good idea on Amazon's part. I often feel that a lengthy list of faults corrected can start you thinking about what else is likely to be going wrong.

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jan 2013 20:34:17 GMT
I'd miss my local Waterstones if it closed. Especially if they replace it with another Pound Shop.

is anyone else having problems with their kindle when wii fi switched on ? mine has started to freeze every time its only 13 month old x

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jan 2013 23:26:13 GMT
Have you giving it a reboot? Like any electronic device it needs to have a reboot every now and then. Whilst they say they can hold a library they don't like too many books.

Has this update done away with kindle post, which I have been unable to access for the last two days. You really tee me off when you do things without so much as a nod to the people paying for your tax free existence.

In reply to an earlier post on 26 Jan 2013 09:22:29 GMT
Denis Powell says:
Roderick, you'll need to ask Customer Services. Amazon won't answer questions here, although if you do and expect a reply I suggest you be a little more polite.

Berzelius says:
It's on the Kindle Store home page. I've just tried it and it says that it is currently unavailable, so there does seem to be a problem. It would be useful if someone without the update could check its availability.

In reply to an earlier post on 26 Jan 2013 10:17:43 GMT
Denis Powell says:
It's available on all other devices. It's just the basic Kindle it's not working on.

Berzelius says:
Thanks. Fortunately for me I rarely look at it. The only use I had for it was to check on the Daily Deal which was once on the home page but is now buried in the Kindle Post; and I now access the Daily Deal by a direct link on my PC.
