My battery is needing to be charged every couple of hours. I only bought it yesterday, and all I'm doing is reading a book. I don't think this is to be expected, is it?

Is it going totally flat? Do you have wi-fi on? Have you allowed it to have a FULL charge?

Denis Powell says:
There can be many causes of a battery drain. The brighter you have the screen the quicker it discharges. Playing music will use less power than viewing a Flash based website. Using some applications you can expect to get no more than 6 hours use from a full charge.

If you install something like Battery HD Pro that will calibrate your device and show you, at any time, how long your battery will last for any particular type of use.

I ended up getting a bright Kindle for reading (battery life of days even when very bright) and the Ipad 4 for a tablet, which has a battery life of 10 hours. Problems solved.

I've had my kindle fire hd about six month, plugged charger in this morning and battery symbol shows a battery with a crack through anybody got any idea of problem. Is battery knackered after such short time?

Denis Powell says:
Your Fire has updated to the latest software. The lightning bolt shows its charging. You can go into Settings and have the percentage charged display alongside.

I am doing quite a bit of reading at the moment, I have my kindle fire hd charging every night, and my battery lasts approx 9 hours before it goes completely flat, shouldn't it last longer than this?

Damaskcat says:
It depends how much you use Wi-Fi, whether you are using it for anything else apart from reading, how bright you have the screen and how quickly you read. No two people use a device in the same way. It is only really e-ink e-readers which have a long battery life between charges.

I use the wifi for facebook and ebay, am I supposed to turn the wifi off when I am not using it?

Denis Powell says:
Turning it off savers battery. I tend to leave Wireless on and charge my Fire HD at night while I'm sleeping. I think it's game playing that uses the battery quickest.

Have brand new kindle fire and only getting 2hours battery life. Just reading and sudoku!

And? If you have complied with all the other notes in this thread about turning down brightness, turning off wifi and closing background apps such as mail, etc. your battery life seems short - call Amazon and talk to them about it.

If you bought a tablet as primarily a reading device you bought the wrong device.

My Kindle HD battery now only lasts about 1 -2 hours before cutting off but works fine when connected to charger. Can you replace batteries

CBRetriever says:
it likely has absolutely nothing to do with your battery and if you replace it, you'll get the same sort of battery life

I found that if you didn't exit properly out of some apps (hitting the home button while the celebratory screen is still running in the app for instance), then that app keeps running, mail keeps checking, notifications really eat into your battery life (I have all mine turned off as well as automatic updates plus I never get free apps (prefer to pay for them because the contant downloading of ads is also a factor)

Elizabeth says:
My battery on my Kindle Fire HD cuts out quite quickly when I am reading a book yet the battery shows 72% or more at least. I am having to keep it plugged into my charger to allow me to continue with reading the book. Can anyone please give me any clues as to how to resolve this. I am coming close to throwing it into the 'bin'. Thank you.

In reply to an earlier post on 15 May 2014 06:45:31 BDT
Throw it in the bin. It's a tablet and therefore not ideal for reading.

It should last about 12-15 hours just reading. This assumes you have read and followed all the previous stated suggestions such as closing apps, minimal back lights, wifi off, notifications off.

Elizabeth says:
The battery still shows a high percentage yet it still just switches off when I am reading. I have switched off WiFi etc etc so all that is running is just the book. It now cuts out even with the charger plugged in. I think your advice is correct Wombat Combat - it will go in the bin. Many thanks for replying to my query.

Have you contacted Customer Services to see if they have any suggestions?

Lesley says:
If it's within the first twelve months of purchase I'd contact Kindle support as it sounds faulty to me. Amazon will replace it within the Warrenty period.
