We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite (Previous Generation) that can be found here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/kindlesoftwareupdates/paperwhite

This update automatically downloads and installs on your Kindle Paperwhite (Previous Generation); however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

The software update includes general improvements and the following feature enhancements:

* Hide Reading Progress Option
While reading, tap the bottom left of the screen to switch between four reading progress options, including Location in book, Time left in chapter, Time left in book, and None, which hides your reading progress from the bottom of the screen. To learn more, go to View Your Reading Progress.

* Improved PDF Performance
General performance and stability improvements for PDF files.

* Improved Homonym Lookup in Chinese and Japanese
When you look up a word that has multiple meanings for the same spelling (homonym), you can view a full list of the available definitions from within the dictionary definition window.

If you have any questions or need help with this update, please post below.

I upgraded from the original kindle to a kindle fire. The kindle fire has been a great disappoinment to me as it cannot be read in sunlight and I live in a country where we have sunlight all day. Now I am undecided about whether to go back to the original kindle or upgrade to a paperwhite. Any advice?

Denis Powell says:
The Paperwhite and the "original" Kindle have lots of differences. For one thing, the Paperwhite has no audio capabilities so no audio books or Text to Speech. Your previous Kindle will also have storage for more books.

You need to decide which features are important to you. If you don't need those the Paperwhite provides or it doesn't do everything you want it for then there's little point in buying it.

How long does it take for this to be delivered to your Kindle, have wifi on all the time but sign of it yet.

I always download it to a PC and sideload it to the kindle, then update - at least that way I'm in control!

Don't have access to PC at mo but really want this update as love the option to get rid of the page info at the bottom of the page as this really bugs me, hope it downloads soon x

Try sync and check for updates.... sorry it's a bit lame.

Damaskcat says:
That doesn't do the update - only checks for new books not yet downloaded and transfers last page read to your account.

Just leave Wi-Fi on and the update will download in due course. I've had Kindles for the last three years and never bothered to do an update manually - there's no need.

I've never done an over the air update in three years. I always do manual updates. I guess I don't have the patience to wait. However I mostly keep my wifi off, only have it on to download a book and then I switch it off again when I'm finished.

Oh, OK. As I said earlier, I always update over USB. I do know that Amazon firmware updates are large files, so Wi-Fi needs to be left on, as rosyposy said earlier. It should happen in the sweet by and by.

The firmware update does allow you to hide the progress indicators, but I'm so used to it now, it feels a bit odd to not have it there.

Same here :-) Though I do leave Wi-Fi on these days when my Kindles are at home.

Why not the Paperwhite first generation? That is unfair! Amazon wants me to buy the new one. I am fan of Kindle and Goodreads. I use Goodreads everyday. I've bought 5 kindles for me and friends. And now you want me to spend money in the new generation of kindle when my current one is fine. You are really bad in marketing.

it's like the automobile released in 2012 that doesn't have rear cupholders and then the one released in 2013 does

there's going to be a new kindle with new features every year

Samuel, this update is for the 1st Generation Paperwhite.

Doesn't look like the goodreads feature is available over here anyway.

Still no word on version 5.4.0 then, typical Amazon!

I love my Paperwhite Kindle but I REALLY miss the buttons to turn the page. It was so EASY to turn the pages with the button and my thumb did not have to move over to the screen all the time. With my old Kindle it was easy to hold the device with one hand - my right OR my left!

In reply to an earlier post on 1 Feb 2014 15:10:36 GMT
It's easy to turn pages with either hand. A short swipe with your thumb changes page in either direction.

Paper white for definite, I had one of the original kindle's until it went wrong. I read my paper white in the garden or in bed at night without any additional light source, fantastic.

Still no word on 5.4.0 hitting the OG Paperwhite? All I want it for is Vocabulary Builder, really. Look Ahead would be nice too, but not essential.

I'm beginning to think it won't happen. Which is a shame, as it's a 'because money' reason. There's no technical reason the v1 Paperwhite can't have Vocabulary Builder at least.
