Which devise? I love my Kindle and find it very user friendly, but it is a Kindle Keyboard.

I had my first experience of computers before you and I've had almost no problems with any of my Kindles.

My only recent difficulties have been coming to terms with Windows 8 on my laptop.

If you think we're all under 5 I don't know why you're bothering to tell us your opinion.

If the Fire doesn't do what you want return it for a refund but please don't suggest that those of us who are happy are either not adults or that our opinions have no value.

Many app developers make their money through ads. That will be the case on all tablets. If you don't like the ads, delete the apps. If you don't like the Amazon recommendations, turn them off.

Well there's not a lot else to say really, you'll not be convinced and most on this forum who have Kindles will not agree (I don't have one, I'm very happy with my netbook) so spread cheer I say!

David, I'm not sure there's much point in trying to help you as you've already made up your mind that the Fire is rubbish. I get most, but not all of my apps from Amazon. I have, for instance, Google Earth, Google Maps, Chrome, Firefox and ITV Player on my Fire HD even though those weren't supplied by Amazon and I haven't had to root my device at all. Amazon doesn't restrict you to their app store. They don't restrict you to only buying ebooks from Amazon. They don't restrict where you can buy your music or movies.

As for "shoving" things in your "grandchildrens face" you can use "Kindle FreeTime" to control what your grandchildren see and have access to.

Yes, in my opinion you have got it wrong, including your attitude. If you'd asked questions about what was possible you'd have received a lot of constructive suggestions.

I think advertising/marketing is everywhere, don't like but have to accept it and ignore as best I can, I get fed up of my broadband provider and others popping up to try to get me to pay for their latest security and I didn't sign up for that either!

Denis,
Ethereal,
I concur with you both. I was offered and declined a "Fire" - I did my prior research, currently not for me. Did the OP do any research prior to buying? - resulting in whinging and bad "attitude "
To OP - relating to 1966? ( excuse me, cough! cough!) Thank you for inducing spluttering and coughing- (just the norm, health issues of late) at least I laughed:) coughed and spluttered regarding your "5" year old naivety/attitude.

Regards.

It's Capitalism gone mad, that's what it is - might as well make it a worthwhile rant!
Now I'm serene for the last dash to xmas ...

Josie, Denis has clearly stated above that he is using apps from other than Amazon so I think you are wrong in this case.

Oh God, another eejit! How, if you can ONLY get apps from Amazon, I am running Google Maps, Google Earth from the Google Android store? I also have the YouTube app and Opera mini.

I am glad you are not buying the Fire, it means someone as misguided as you isn't using it because you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

Not often we are in full agreement :-)
Things are usually not what some people think they are but are what they are.

huh?

I have lots of apps from 1mobile.com and goodereader.com on my Kindle Fire and they work just fine (I even have their app stores loaded on my Fire). When I first got my Fire, those were the only places I could get pps from.

as far as books go, I too, like Denis, get scads of books from other sites (I read a lot of sci-fi so Baen is a good source)

David, you're giving very little information. Saying "alternative routes" tells us nothing. I also have no idea what "android repositories" are. I also don't know what you want when you say "sync with my phone". What are you wishing to sync?

As for installing apps other than those in the Amazon app store, have you changed the Settings to "allow the installation of applications from unknown sources"?

Have you installed an app store such as 1mobile as that makes it easy to install apps from them, including Chrome etc.

and there's an excellent how to video over at the goodereder.com apps store FAQs that shows how to install their app store on your Kindle Fire (it seems aimed at those without any computer know how)
