Hi peeps,

Are Amazon about to launch a new "basic" Kindle? The only reason I ask, is that they seem to keep dropping the price - when I got mine back in 2012, it was £89. Now it's down to £59, and I'm wondering if this is because they're planning on launching an updated version.

Any help / thoughts much appreciated.

The simple answer is that nobody will know anything until Amazon announces it but they usually release new devices in the Autumn to attract Christmas orders.

Wouldn't it be nice they increased the screen size, not by making the device larger but by reducing the bezel around it. Less page turning would suit me.

Perhaps buttons will be dropped altogether and the new basic will be a touch screen.

I think the problem with a larger screen size is that they are already cut from much larger sheets. Cutting fewer could increase the unit price significantly.

A smaller bezel might mean the device itself would be less rigid allowing potentially damaging flexing of the screen itself.

I wouldn't hold my breath expecting a bigger screen but I think the days of mechanical page turn buttons is numbered.

It might just be down to a price war, since I think the competition (Nook, Kobo) have rock-bottom prices on their entry-level ereaders to try and make a dent in Amazon's market.

Got to admit that I didn't think of that! Mind you, when I got my Kindle, it was a choice of the Kindle or the Kobo - the Nook was just a rumour here in the UK...
