A friend got me a waterstones voucher for a present, intending it to be able to be used with my recently bought kindle.
Can I use waterstones e-books on my kindle, or are they not compatible?
Please someone help before I potentially waste money on an e-book and turns out cannot be used for my kindle
thanks in advance

Nope, the only paid for books you can use on the Kindle are bought from Amazon. It's a closed format like itunes
You can get DRM free books from Gutenberg etc which will work.

Thank you.
Guess I'll just buy real books with the voucher, for those times when a kindle isn't a viable option. Like bath time reading or sat at bus stop in the rain lol

Or buy a Sony reader - that works with Waterstones books

hi just bought a Kindle and you can convert open books on calibre a piece of software that will change it to a formate that kindle can read. do a search on google and you will find lots of stuff about it

Calibre will not convert DRM'd books and Waterstones has DRM'd books.

BUT you can buy other places besides Amazon (Not waterstones, unfortunately). BAEN has a great site for those who like Fantasy and Sci/fi. Smashwords.com is another site that has multiple formats. Feedbooks.com and manybooks.net are others.

What is it a consipracy to make it so hard for users to use they go back fo fossil fuel books - bah,,,,

Sorry F Brown but you can get books from ANYWHERE on the planet and use them on the Kindle as long as they are in the correct formats that the Kindle can read. It isn't a closed format anything like iTunes, that is why you can, indeed, use Gutenberg!

You can get, as Highwayman says, programs to remove DRM but that is not for open discussion but careful use of google always comes up trumps.

Garscadden says:
Sorry, this is a bit nit picky, but the Kindle format is a lot more closed than itunes - in that AMazon own the spec for kindle books, whilst Apple use standard format (ISO/MPEG standards for music and video, IDPF standards for books). Itunes itself seems a lot more open too - it accepts multiple formats (mp4, mp3, WAV, AIFF, + anything quick time can play).

Once you add DRM how open the format is irrelevant, as far as moving purchased content elsewhere.

All of which is irrelevant :)

Just as an added aside - It is very easy to remove DRM from most book formats, as Highwayman says - but a lot of people here seem to think you are the devil if you do. Juts use google for obvious drm removal type searches, and you should find out how.

@Julian Guppy. It might be worth contacting Waterstones website and telling them your mistake, especially if it was recently. You have a 7 day return allowance on anything bought on the web.

Not all ebooks on Amazon have DRM. As the Kindle can read non-drm mobi format there are plenty of options for buying/downloading books from elsewhere.

Garscadden - I dont think anyone claims people are the devil for mentioning the removal of DRM - what DOES niggle me though is the liberal suggestion that you can do so without going in to the legal ins and outs, the technical ins and outs etc.

Of course it IS possible. It is also possible to go on a spree with identity theft, to copy DVD's etc but that doesn't make it right?

Garscadden says:
Paul - emotion not coming across, sorry. That part was meant fairly humourously (rather than nasty / literal).

From my personal perspective it is no different to ripping a cd, or DVD for that matter (and legally they would seem equivalent, ripping a cd is bypassing technical restriction). The former pretty much everyone one does, the latter less so.

Sorry, I went way off topic.

This is why I havent gone to ebooks - you cant share them - i dont want to copy them but i do want to be able to let friends read them - just like a paper book - not too much to ask - when the industry gets that sorted the market is ready.

Denis Powell says:
The UK Government is consulting on a plan to make copies of digital media legal for personal use, but that's unlikely to cover sharing. In the US they have a 2 week. one time only, lending structure for some books, but even then not all publishers allow their books to be loaned. I don't see that changing any time soon without the cost of eBooks increasing as a result. Libraries currently pay more than we do for eBooks in order to be able to lend them and Publishers may well decide that we should also pay extra for the same right.

Most Publishers don't, at the moment, see eBook lending as likely to lead to an increase in sales so until they do things won't change.

So sharing your books is more important to you than reading them yourself? Very strange!

Rumpole says:
If you are part of a small circle of trusted friends who regularly share books, you could register all the Kindles (or at least 6 of them) onto one account and settle up at the end of each month with the person whose credit card is used on the account.
You could even pool by all chipping in for a monthly gift certificate to buy an agreed list of books, which would require less trust.
Families do this, but it would also work for a book club or some such.
It would be even better than lending books as you could read the same book at the same time (as long as you didn't "synch"). You would end up with something like a very small, very private lending library.....

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me...! What if someone downloaded too many that weren't to the others' taste? What if someone didn't pay up? I have certain friends who I would trust with anything... but not with this!!

Have tried to get 'Great expectations' and am amazed that it is not free - after all it is out of copyright. Could it be something to do with a recent BBC serial I wonder?
