I have been downloading books for my Sony e.reader for couple of years and was using other websites as the Kindle format was not supported by my Sony reader. My husband has now bought me an Android tablet and I have the Kindle app as there is a huge choice of books and I have bought quite a few. However, I also want to be able to buy kindle books from I have an account on the French site but every time I click on a book to buy it, I get a message sending me back to the English site, where the book I want is available in German or Italian but not in French! How can get round this problem??

You can buy phisical things anywhere. ebooks can only be purchased in your home territory for publishing/legal reasons.

You may need to go to Manage My Kindle and check where you Kindle is registered - if it is registered in the UK then that is why - change that to France if you live in France.

Simply put, you cannot get around it. You don't live in France hence you cannot purchase eBooks in that country.

Denis Powell says:
If the ebook you want isn't available on it's because the Publisher hasn't licensed it for sale in the UK, or doesn't own the UK rights. If you could buy from the .fr site they could only sell you the same ebooks as the site for that reason.

It's not like paper books where Amazon actually buys them and can then do what it lies with them. For ebooks, in many cases, Amazon are only the Shop Window and act as agents of sale.

Think of it like buying a house. Although you may make the payment to a Solicitor, for instance, you're still buying the house from the house owner. In many cases you're buying your ebook from the Publisher and Amazon is collecting the money and taking a commission for the work involved, just like the solicitor.

Have you registered the Kindle to your Amazon account? If you haven't you need to switch the Kindle on - connect it to Wi-Fi and then register it to your account - the device will tell you how to do this. Which Kindle do you have and did you buy it from Amazon?

ChrisJ says:
Do you have an Amazon Account? If not, you will need to get an e-mail address (if you dont have one already) and then create an account at Amazon using that email address.
Once you have an account (with a valid credit card), you can then buy books. You can also buy a gift certificate for your self and delete the credit card details if you want.

I live in France and hate the place like death for various reasons. I have a kindle account with several books in it all bought in France. If I escape to a happier place can I take my kindle books with me?

CBRetriever says:
yep, just migrate your account (probably to unless it's to another country with a kindle store)

and I love France (lived there for over 4 years so far)

I live in France and have been given a Kindle for Christmas. I charged up the device, registered to my account, bought my first book and spent Boxing Day reading it. When I went order another, I realized that despite registering to my uk amazon account, I can only order from the store, which has a limited selection of English language books and charges more for them. For example, the book I was considering costs £5.84 on UK store and €12.99 in the French store. This rather defeats the purpose of my getting a kindle as it would be cheaper for me to order paper copies of the books via my UK account & wait for delivery. Feeling deceived & disappointed!

CBRetriever says:
1.8 million is limited? Oops, it went up, it's now 1.9 million.

and right now they're running a special 12 days of Christmas with 1000 ebooks in english at over 50% off - I bought 22 books for the equivalent of 27.8906 GBP (according to today's conversion rates)

and then they also offer at least one book a day in their Offre Eclair (Daily Deal) in English

and pay attention to the little plus sign in front of the word Kindle in the Formats box as this book:

And When She Was Good by Laura Lippman as it's listed for both 4.74 & 5.46 euros by different publishers

There are probably as many english books on .fr as there are on You must be looking in the wrong place.
Do you feel deceived and disappointed when you buy something in France that is cheaper than it is in England? It does make you sound rather petulant.
The Kindle is a device upon which to read and not a ticket to buy cheap books. Unless of course, you received a Kindle Fire in which case it is also a tablet. Have you conveyed your disppointment to the person who gave you this ill conceived and thoughtless gift?

Edit: Beaten to it. The added sarcasm was well deserved though.

You can only buy from the UK store if you live in UK, Channel Islands and Ireland.
As you have chosen to live in France, you have also chosen to buy things in Euros, which is what the .FR store uses.

Can someone please tell me if I need second Kindle for stuff bought on UK Amazon?
I have a US ac and Kindle registered there.
Is there no way of putting UK content on US registered Kindle?

In reply to an earlier post on 2 Jan 2014 18:24:06 GMT
Denis Powell says:
You need to be a resident of the UK, Ireland, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands to be able to buy ebooks from because the site only has licenses that can be sold in those areas.

If a book isn't licensed for sale in the US then it can't be bought in that country.

JoJo- I don't understand why people are being so sarcastic to you. I had the exactly same feeling as you after I just bought my daughter a kindle for christmas. However, I now found that many of the books I wanted on amazon uk are indeed available on amazon fr, just more expensive. Somehow, I find it harder to search for books on so I suggest looking for a precise title on after browsing on I hope that helps!

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Jan 2014 10:30:28 GMT
You can also search by ISBN, so if you copy and paste the isbn from one book on (eg 978-0718157838) and search it on .fr, it comes up with the same book, where you can then select kindle edition :)

and conversely I look at the daily special on and then, if I like it, buy it on as the price is reduced there as well

and I was only joking with my sarcasm (except to the person who said they hated France) and if you note, I pointed her in the direction of some wonderful deals

I am an American living in France and do 95% of my reading in English. In the Amazon French Kindle shop, Amazon only offers 785 English titles in litterature, and of those, only 85 books in contemporary literature (other 700 are classics (no DRM) poetry etc.! Despite this very lean offering , Amazon absolutely refuses to let me order books that are not offered in French store from the US or UK site.
This means my kindle is useless for reading any of the books I would like to read.
For me this shows how little Amazon cares about their clients

@Mllp: You have obviously looked in the shop to come up with such numbers - just they don't seem to tie up with other peoples experience. Do you have some very specific search algorithm like +modern +American -classic -foreign +UK -big words

Just in 30 seconds looking at the "Livres anglais et étrangers" section neatly laid out in top 100 order for about 20 genres, with about 4 or 5 other sections per page ... I think you would profit from looking again.

I seem to recall that CBRetriever - whose post is immediately above yours - can see nearly 2 million books in English on the French site - and she lives in France so maybe you are making your search terms too specific?

Boutique Kindle › Ebooks Kindle › Ebooks en langues étrangères › Ebooks en anglais

Résultats 1 - 48 sur 1 941 480

that's over 1.9 million on

btw, if you're searching on English, you need to search on Anglais or better yet shop from a PC and

"Parcourir les Boutiques" (menu in upper left of webpage) and go down to
"Kindle" and slide over to
"Tous les ebooks Kindle"
then look in the blue bar at the top of the page and click on "Ebooks en langues étrangères"
then click on "Anglais"

and then you'll see categories in English on the left
