I managed to break my Kindle last night (First generation) and have been looking at possible replacements.
I've already decided that I don't need a Kindle Fire as I have 2 smart phones and a mini laptop to deal with all surfing and emails.

I like the look of the Kindle White, but am a little but puzzled. I undersatnd the technical difference between the new paperwhite (Wi-Fi) and the 3G model, but wonder why Amazon refer to the 3G model as "previous generation"? Is it due for replacement with a new model?

I am not yet convinced 3G access is worth another 50 over wi-fi only, but am extremely reluctant to purchase a 3G previous generation, if there's an improved model just around the corner. Does anyone know?

There is a next generation Paperwhite 3G - I have one! Amazon are currently out of stock of them I think but you may be able to get one from somewhere like Tecso if you have a look. 3G is useful if you like to download books when you're away from home or use the translation service or Wikipedia when away form home. If money is the most important factor in the purchase and you have Wi-Fi at home then go for the Wi-Fi only version.

First Generation? You actually had one of those big white wedge shaped ones with a keyboard below the screen and a scroll wheel? I've never even seen one.

And yes, there is a 3G New paperwhite Kindle Paperwhite 3G, 6" High Resolution Display with Next-Gen Built-in Light, Free 3G + Wi-Fi

3G is useful if you find yourself somewhere w/o wifi access (my workplace for me), or travel a lot (it's sometimes difficult to connect to wifi in some places) or want to use the Instant Translation w/o being tethered to a wifi hot spot

Thanks. What is the difference between the previous generation Paperwhite 3G (as currently being sold by Amazon) and the next generation, for which Amazon are quoting a 2-4 months delivery time?

The most noticeable difference is that the screen of the new version is more evenly lit. The 1st generation Paperwhite tended to show uneven areas at the bottom of the screen where the lights are situated.

The New version has add reading enhancements like being able to go to references without leaving the page you're reading as they appear in a pop-up window. Also, you can skim forward and backwards in a book in a pop-up window, again not moving from your current page and not changing the furthest page read.

There are other differences, like Cloud Collections but that's a whole other discussion and very controversial.
