Amazon recently created a new community for authors. The `Meet Our Authors' community is designed to give authors a space to engage with one another and promote their latest and greatest works.

With the advent of the new community, we will no longer allow self-promotional posts in other communities. Starting on December 15, 2011, all "shameless self-promotion" activity will be limited to the `Meet Our Authors' community. Promotional threads outside of these forums will be removed.

We invite authors and interested readers to come join the discussion at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/meet%20our%20authors

We look forward to seeing you!

Bibilofilia says:
Well, how about that!

Does the ban on Promos also include a ban on authors' spats and complaints about each other?

One thing it won't stop is author vs author wars I've just seen continuing.

I've said hello on the new forum though and hope it works out, I'll check back there in the new year!

Edit - Didn't see Bibilo's post before sending mine, uncanny!

Not sure about this quite liked the interaction with the authors. Most authors would tell you it was a promotion in the thread title, if you don't like promotions don't read them. Without doubt there were some who were overbearing, but we did encourage them by getting into arguements etc not a big fan of censorship

Except for the last post...

Whs McIntyre says:
I can't be bothered with spammers but it's easy to ignore the usual suspects. I've never seen a problem with a wee self-promo providing it's concise, on topic and one of mine. Setting up an Alcatraz for authors seems to me like a poor business model for Amazon, who must make a right few quid out of the Indies.

Karen Lowe says:
Well, it was only a matter of time... the dotcom site coralled the authors a while ago.

Karen Lowe says:
Oh, and while I'm about it, why do they call it 'Meet Our Authors'? Rather possessive, I thought.

Amber Lady says:
Mixed feelings about this...it will stop the Rocky's of this world for sure, but I have no inclination to go wandering around Amazon's various discussion sections so I'll miss out on the "good" author promotions...unless people who have read the books mention them in this forum.

Oh well, pros and cons. * shrugs *

Amber Lady: "...unless people who have read the books mention them in this forum."

That's what used to happen. And very successful it was too. I've discovered many a great writer through these forums. All recommended by readers, not writers.

Halo572 says:
Don't see this as a problem at all. I don't look at the Kindle boards for author generated threads, I want to see what users are saying.

Having a thread kept alive for weeks by someone who is trying to sell their books/ebooks is very irritating being as I only visit a couple of times a month and there are the same people posting the same promos and using the same thread resurrection strategies time after time.

Whs McIntyre says:
Authors are readers too and often give good recommendations and not only of their own books. Their opinions are just as valid as those of people who read only. I have never spammed my books and have only mentioned them where relevant and where the topic invited me to do so. I've recommended many more books by other authors than I have 'self-promo'd' my own. I don't expect readers will venture to the MOA for book recs, but under the new apartheid regime that banishes writers to their very own forum (which I don't think even has a link to it yet) why would a writer bother coming back here to recommend a book to - as Halo572 describes - a user? It's all very sledgehammer/nut.

Ah well, so long and thanks for all the fish........ see you over on Goodreads!
