Good luck Harleycat. I hope your new kindle gives you as much pleasure as mine has given me. You'll find these forums are a wonderful source of support, friendship and fun. That's what positive minded people like you will meet with here anyway. Looking forward to hearing from you some more in future.

I was quite keen to get chatting with someone here but have to turn my computer off now as I can hear dreadful thunder outside and see the flashes of lightning. Might get a power surge or something in the computer. It's the middle of a rather nasty winter here in New Zealand now so I think I'll head straight to bed as its pretty late anyway. Sweet dreams all.

Hi Harleycat, welcome to the fold.
You have probably already explored the forum a bit so you know about the FAQ's which are particularly useful for new Kindlers. The Forum itself is populated by a cross section of society, sometimes they're a***holes, but more often than not, most Forum discussions create genuine and creative responses.
Have fun.

A great many of us from here (well over 1500 at last count) have moved on to a fun, friendly forum.
Chock full of great books and rather bonkers people.

K. A. Newton says:
I have a strip of 6 sockets which has inbuilt protection for power surges. One plug on a lead plugs in the wall and six sockets for TV Video DVD etc.

And I have another for PC/Laptop. Printer, Scanner etc.

We had a rented TV once and lightening hit our chimney stack travelled down the aerial went through the video recorder (which was switched off) went into the TV and blew it up.

The TV engineer was amazed the lightening had travelled through the video recorder without damaging it or affecting it any way.

Rest of the electrictity sockets were unaffected.

Tui Allen says:
I'd have that "Protection" checked by a reputable computer doctor. I was using one of those thinking I was safe and was told it was not protecting me from anything.
The option that works is not the cheap option. It's a UPS for Uninterruptable Power Supply. Your computer plugs into it instead of the wall and it really does protect and also if your power goes down it keeps power to the computer for a while, so you have time to shut things down and save files and so on.
We had to go that way here because we get so many power cuts and power surges, and so many severe electrical storms.
Read about it here:

When my first kindle was due, I sat on the stairs waiting to grab it quick. Glad it came on the day it was supposed to or my bum would have been very numb by the time it did.

We have a UPS for our computer and they're brilliant.

I wouldn't be without a UPS. Mine's made by APC. The voltage here can be quite variable and it automatically trims the incoming voltage to keep it around 230V as well as providing all the usual surge protection and running off battery if the mains goes. It has frequently cut in during a 'brown out' (a blip in the supply) and protected my PC from corruption.

We live in the country and for some reason the power is way less reliable out her than it is in cities. Sometimes I think I'm in the third world. UPS essential.

When . . . er . . .. . . "our" . . . first kindle arrived, I grabbed it and started to play and became immediately absorbed in the books that had already downloaded while it was in the mail. My bloke took one look at me with that thing and he went to his computer there and then and ordered another one for himself. He could see he was never going to get his hands on "our" first one.

Damaskcat says:
Yes ours is APC too.

Brian, I am a big kid. I keep telling you that, but nobody believes me. I did try growing up once, but it was far too boring. Anyway, I'd just finished a paperback and didn't want to start another one, knowing my kindle was on it's way.

harleycat, enjoy your kindle, but you're doing it wrong. Kindling comes first, all other jobs second.
