We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite which can be found here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/kindlesoftwareupdates/paperwhite

The software update will be delivered wirelessly and includes a feature enhancement and general improvements for your Kindle Paperwhite. This update automatically downloads and installs for Kindle Paperwhite customers; however, you can also manually download the software and update your device via USB cable.

The software update includes the following enhancement:

Improvements when buying from a book sample:
While reading a sample of a book, you can view the price of the full book and purchase from the reading toolbar with one tap.

Seems a very small 'improvement' for an update. I wonder if anything else was fixed under the bonnet?

Well, yes - it does say "includes a feature enhancement" AND "general improvements". I think the "no price when buying-from-sample" issue has been a gripe for a long time. My guess is that various bug fixes and performance tweaks were due to be released, and so they took the opportunity to include the buy-from-sample enhancement at the same time.

I always have the wifi on - does it mean that when I switch my paperwhite on, it will start to download the update itself?

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jun 2013 02:24:00 BDT
It doesn't bother me so much as I go to the book info page first, and then I can see the prices. It's an extra step but I don't buy a lot of books from my Kindle so I can imagine may be this extra step annoys some much more so than me.

Amazon push out updates on a rolling programme. My guess is that it's based on serial number but whatever it is there's no way of knowing when you'll get it. Depending on how many have been sold I'd guess it could be weeks or months.

It's very easy to install manually.

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jun 2013 07:10:00 BDT
It does it whilst the unit is in standby.

Likewise, it doesn't bother me. But as well as the "extra clicks", some people would click "Buy it now" after reading the sample expecting to see the current price for confirmation, so they were annoyed when it bought it immediately, even if the price had risen in the meantime. I remember seeing a number of discussions about this in the past.

I have the kindle paperwhite touch screen and I have the following gripe to make if anyone else has had the same problem. The touch screen is too sensitive. There are many times when I touch screen to forward the next page it goes to the end of the book and then I have to try and find out what page I was on to get back to the original page. Has anyone else got the same problem and if so can you advise please as this is getting really annoying now.

Damaskcat says:
I haven't found it is too sensitive though I find you need a very light touch on the screen to turn the page. That suits me as I find it annoying if touch screens don't respond to a light touch.

Even if your screen were super-sensative, a single touch should still only advance a single page.

Were you by any change touching on a footnote annotation that might jump you forwards to that footnote text, which is usually right at the back of the book?

I agree the screen is very bad .Also why do I have to charge my kindle every day maggie

Denis Powell says:
I have no idea how you're getting to the end of the book. I've tried to duplicate that and can't, but you can always go back to where you were by tapping on the top of the screen to bring up the menu and then the back button.

Denis Powell says:
Which Kindle do you have? Is it a Fire?

If it's a Paperwhite, with the brightness set to 10 and Wireless off, using a mid range font size you should get around 28 hours of reading. If you've downloaded a lot of books you may have one or more stuck indexing which will deplete the battery quite quickly. You can check for that by going to the Home page and entering a nonsense word in the Search box, such as xtrvwt. If there are any books still indexing it will tell you. If it's been some time since you downloaded anything you should delete those books that are stuck and re-download them.

Rhi, your Paperwhite is still under guarantee. Contact Customer Services and report your problem to them but try a Restart first.

Does anyone know the current latest version for Kindle Keyboard? I think I have 3.4.something - is it still being updated?

In reply to an earlier post on 30 Jun 2013 12:24:20 BDT
Damaskcat says:
I think that is the latest version. There haven't been any updates recently but then maybe there is nothing that needs fixing.

In reply to an earlier post on 1 Jul 2013 13:43:11 BDT
yes, I have the same experience - so much so that I frequently make a mental note of the page number I am on, so that I can return to that page if I suddenly find myself at a loss, wondering where the hell it has suddenly taken me just because I touched the screen.

The Paperwhite is a B&W e-ink device, did you not check the specifications when you bought it?

Nothing that doesn't involve the use of a box of coloured felt-tip pens.

No, it was a gift, so I was unable to choose it. Thanks for your response.

I've just bought a kindle paperwhite because my kindle keyboard which I have had for 30 months has died. I know it is early days but I much prefer my keyboard, I liked the way the books titles were displayed the fact that I could make collections. I know it was pretty basic but it suited me. Now all my books have been loaded onto the paperwhite indiscriminately ie books I have read and were in 'the cloud' with new titles waiting to be read! Oh for my old kindle.
