Which Kindle for an 80yr old?

I am trying to choose a kindle for my Mum as a surprise for her 80th birthday. She loves to read but has an eye condition which means that eyestrain is an issue - so which is the best to ease this? She is not very good with gadgets so it needs to be as simple as possible (I will be downloading the books for her).
If possible it would be good if I could download some audible books too so that when her eyes are too tired she can still listen to a book. Which Kindles is this possible on?

Currently none of the eink models on offer have audio, so if that's a pre-requisite and it has to be a Kindle then you'd need a Fire model. However for someone who just wishes to read the eink models are by far the most easy to use. Also the eink is like reading a paper book, a lot of people get tired eyes looking at backlit tablet screens for long periods of time.

Kindle fire HD would seem a good choice, Clare.

My mum is 80 and is addicted to her kindle now. She has the basic kindle model (£69) as it has buttons she can easily use. She wouldn't be able to cope with the paperwhite version or the kindle fire. Once she got used to it she found it very easy to use and I download all her books for her as her kindle is on my account.

For eye strain avoid the kindle fire.

The basic model can't play audio books but to be honest a dedicated audio player is much more practical for audio books.

May be we should campaign for a Kindle Fire that just downloads e-books and audiobooks for the elderlies who don't want the music and the internet.

Now that Audible books is working without an app it is much easier to use. I tend to listen to my audible audio books on the Fire in the house. Still use my mp3 players (hidden in my pocket) when travelling.

That's great, thank you very much for that input, very helpful. I think I will dispense with the audio idea after this advise. Campaigning for an 'elderly friendly' kindle is a great idea. Thanks again, much appreciated.

Remember your Mum can set the Kindle to view in landscape mode. This means if the font is made larger you get more words to the line though the page turner on a Basic Kindle would then be at top and bottom instead of left and right.

I don't think swipe screens are necessarily easier for those of us with arthritic fingers. Try as I might, I simply cannot control the damn things, whether it's my daughter's Apple Mac, a touchscreen phone or a tablet. I am in despair that they will gradually take over from keyboards/pads. And what is going to happen to those of us who touchtype at speed??

I think the basic Kindle is great, even for my 70+ years old arthritic hands.

Swipe a screen doesn't require any finger movement - or fingers come to that. Only hand movement.
