Mine has been charging since about 2.30 and is still showing an orange light. How long does it normally take to fully charge?

mmm, are you charging from the mains? Make sure the usb cable is securely into the plug. My K2 takes 2 hours to fully charge from the mains, but the one time I did it via usb and the pc it took all day.

Mine took about an hour plugged into the mains. As Chookgate says, USB charging from your Mac or PC can take a lot longer.

Thanks - I'm charging it on the mains but it had a totally flat battery when I got it. Still on orange but the bat is showing almost full now.

That's very slow. It might be worth contacting Customer Services - you may have a faulty charger.

Mr Farrer - my wife has the same problem with her new Kindle, except that the wifi connection is even more intermittent than yours. I had an 80min call to customer services who were very good, helping with new software downloads and all sorts of other stuff. But the connection still doesn't work. Mains charging takes over 5 hours and even after that the device won't start without a hard restart. Battery life 1 - 2 days. I don't have these problems with a book - just open and read!

How do I perform a hard restart? My kindle is taking forever to charge and stays stuck on the screensaver!

Make sure your wifi is off and don't completely empty the battery.Having said that I have heard that it is advisable to completely empty the battery on occasions .

Denis Powell says:
Auld, that used to be the case with the older type rechargeable batteries but the batteries used in the Kindle can actually be damaged by completely draining them and it shortens their lifespan. The Kindle won't actually allow you to drain the battery completely in normal use, but that could happen if left unused for any significant length of time when the battery is already low.

They won't last forever, of course, no matter how well you look after them, but they have a theoretical lifetime of at least 500 charge cycles which for most people would be around 10 years and they will have almost certainly moved on to something new by then. In practice, depending on a number of different factors, including taking them to a hot climate and reading in the sun when the battery temperature could easily exceed it's "safe to use" figure (Remember that Forecast Temperatures are Shade ones), I suspect some will report noticable reductions in capacity in less time.

To do a hard reset hold the on-off key over to the right after 20-40 seconds. Eventually the Kindle will commence the re-set and do everything automatically.

It can take a long time to charge if it's indexing - either the biannual reindex or if it's got stuck trying to index a dodgy file. Mine takes about half an hour if doing neither of these things.
