Josiah Trenchard Part One The Might of Fortitude

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Commander Josiah Trenchard is a no-nonsense, foul mouthed, alcohol fuelled action hero.

He's been fighting hard in the war that's been raging between the United Worlds and the Insurgents ever since the Belatu-Cadros uprising on Mars four years ago. Trenchard was almost killed during that battle; scarred both physically and emotionally. Now he's fighting the increasingly desperate Insurgents once more when he's unexpectedly re-assigned to an untested prototype vessel.

The Wolverine class "Might of Fortitude" has been designed to be the most deadly hunter-killer in the fleet and the cramped, submarine-like vessel is about to be launched on her maiden voyage. Her mission: to hunt down bloodthirsty pirates who have unleashed a reign of terror throughout the asteroid belt. With a command style that is the bastard son of Dirty Harry and Gene Hunt, Trenchard struggles to cope with a woefully inexperienced crew of misfits and reprobates. Bad turns to worse when the hunter becomes the hunted and Commander Trenchard must put his life on the line to save his ship, his crew, and the honour of the Space Navy.

This is part one in the "Josiah Trenchard" series of novella length stories.

Length: 33,000 words (estimated).

PARENTAL ADVISORY: EXPLICIT CONTENT!

This book contains scenes of a violent nature and repetitive use of swearing that may be unsettling to some readers. Please do not read it if you are of a sensitive nature. Parents please use discretion if you allow your children to read this story, it is intended for adults.

For Riley Day, reluctant enforcer for crime lord Mike Nash, worse is about to happen. The biggest gang war the city of Thirnbridge has ever seen is about to erupt and threaten not only his own life, but the lives of innocent men, women and children. Soon forced into a plot of murder and revenge, Riley will uncover corrupt and evil forces that will do anything to get what they want and who will kill anyone that stands in their way...

With characters you will both love and loathe, NUMB will keep you turning the pages until the explosive, blood-soaked conclusion...

Tales of the City Episode 1: Taking the Plunge

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Armistead Maupin hit on something truly wonderful when he first started his 'Tales of the City'. First appearing in serialised form in the press it soon went on to become a book, and then a series of books.

This episode is the first novella in the series. It is 1976 and Mary Ann has gone on holiday to San Francisco. After a week there she phones her parents and tells them she won't be coming home, and she is packing in her job. Taking such a big decision she stays with a friend, until she finds her own place, at 28 Barbary Lane, owned by Anna Madrigal.

In this episode you get to start meeting the other residents where Mary Ann now lives, as well as the people she works with. Why 'Tales of the City' works is because it is about people, more normal to dysfunctional, as well as showing the quirks and flaws in their characters. The characters feel like they live and breathe and the stories are interesting. If you have never read any of the 'Tales of the City' before, this is an ideal time whilst this is on promotional; you will also see why the tales have become addictive and loved by people throughout the world. With drug taking and trying to pick up a partner this is as real and as readable as it was when first published.

Armistead Maupin was talking about his last book this am on BBC1 Breakfast this morning.

a humourous one.... (allegedly!)

Now in Paperback!

Product Description
Jim Mullen has been writing "The Village Idiot," a weekly column syndicated in 600 newspapers around the country for the past ten years.

"Now in Paperback!" is a collection of Jim's favorite columns including such reader favorites as "The First Thanksgiving Family Feud," "The Hiltons' Guide to Raising Children," and "Learner's Permit to Kill," which explains why James Bond never gets jet lag.

Mr. Mullen's book "It Takes A Village Idiot" was the runner-up for the 2001 Thurber Prize for American Humor and his spoof of baby memory books, "Baby's First Tattoo," is in its 15th printing.
About the Author
Jim Mullen lived in New York's Greenwich Village for twenty years before moving to a farm in the Catskill Mountains. His fictionalized memoir of the experience, "It Takes a Village Idiot: Complicating the Simple Life" was a finalist for the 2001 Thurber Prize for American Humor. It got rave reviews from the Washington Post, the Nashville Tennessean, the Virginian Pilot, CNN, the Cleveland Pain Dealer and the Baltimore Sun. The Rocky Mountain News named it one of their "Best Books of the Year." His spoof of a baby shower gift book, "Baby's First Tattoo" is now in its fifteenth printing. "Most baby books have places where you fill in the blanks for things like `Baby's First Tooth' and `Baby's First Haircut.' Mullen's has spaces for things like `Baby's First Ritalin Prescription' and `Baby's First Lawyer.' It's a totally different take on child-rearing." For thirteen years, Mr. Mullen wrote a column in Entertainment Weekly magazine where he regularly made fun of self-centered celebrities and their enablers. His freelance work has appeared in the New York Times, New York Magazine, the Village Voice, and many other magazines. Since 2002 he has been writing a weekly newspaper column for United Features Syndicate called "The Village Idiot."

Mason Wilson & The Dead Bird Debacle

Product Description
Is Mason Wilson just another wimpy kid? Wimps don't embark on an unauthorized night-time trip to a strange, old factory; he'll do anything to stop his penniless family being thrown out of their home.

There's a mystery to solve to win the grand prize - if you hardly ever find dead birds lying around, why are whole flocks of them starting to fall from the sky all over the place? Does the Bible really say that it's a sign of the end of the world?

Mason uncovers some gross goings-on and plans that will change the world for ever. Should he do the right thing and try and stop them? He'll lose an opportunity of a lifetime if he does; still, when his parents find out he's gone missing, that will be the least of his worries!

A quirky adventure-mystery for 9-12's that the whole family can enjoy.

(Previously published as "They Shoot Birds, Don't They?)

Amazon Review: "I have never read a novel quite like this - it is absolutely original and bizarre in many respects but well written in an engaging, pleasing style."

Amazon Review: "Didn't take me long to read this book as it grabbed me right at the beginning...this is a great read for children and also adults too who fancy a bit of light reading. Found it to be very informative as well. Good book - good buy."

Subway Dancer and Other Stories

Product Description
SUBWAY DANCER AND OTHER STORIES is a new collection of gripping short fiction by Catherine Ryan Hyde, the bestselling author of many beloved novels, including DON'T LET ME GO and PAY IT FORWARD, and of other critically acclaimed short story collections, including EARTHQUAKE WEATHER and ALWAYS CHLOE.

A striking and emotionally resonant collection, SUBWAY DANCER AND OTHER STORIES is a compilation of stories originally published in some of the most respected literary magazines in the country, including The Antioch Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Glimmer Train and Ploughshares.

In the award-winning story "Bloodlines," two neighbors of different ethnicities are friends in spite of their differences...until an argument about expensive purebred dogs versus mutts from the pound brings the whole neighborhood's precarious balance crashing down. "Bloodlines" was reprinted in Bark Magazine's best-selling anthology Dog is My Co-Pilot and was cited in Best American Short Stories.

In Witness to Breath, a woman living a dangerous life working on the streets takes in an elderly dog left behind when his owner is killed in a robbery. Despite never having been a dog person, their brief relationship changes her in ways she never could have expected.

In Disappearances, a man not fluent in his own emotions tries unsuccessfully to broadside a train in his pickup truck, then spends the rest of the story figuring out the first clue to why he'd try to do such a thing.

Among the other riveting and beautifully crafted stories included in this collection, "Five Singing Gardeners and One Dead Stranger" and "Requiem For a Flamer" were nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and "The Man Who Found You in the Woods" was cited in Best American Short Stories.

This collection includes an Author's Note by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

This looks interesting

Such is Us by Krista Thomas

"...the great loves of our lives aren't the people we marry or the ones
we are with for years, but the ones we let get away."
Such is Us is the story of two college friends, Charles Parker and Caroline Belford who let the fear of the unknown keep them from admitting their true feelings for one another. Years later, Charles has settled into a career in Charlotte, North Carolina, while Caroline is living in D.C. working on a campaign for her politician boyfriend as he runs for Senate. Fed up with the constant reminders of her that seem to surround him, Charles sets out to finally tell her the truth. But will it be four years too late?

Baehrly Breathing (Goldie Locke and the Were Bears #1)
A spin-off of the popular Cindy Eller series.

The first book in the Goldie Locke and the Were Bears series.

It's difficult to be taken seriously when you are a member of the Magical community and saddled with the unfortunate name 'Goldie Locke'. It certainly doesn't help if you are also about five feet tall, blond, and most commonly described as 'cute.'. What was a girl to do?

Become one of the most dreaded Magical environmental lawyers of all time?

Goldie isn't there yet, but she's well on her way when a case drags her into uncharted territory-- working with Ordinary officials to figure out why 'unusual' remains are being discovered all around New England.

With her hands full and a new dragon on the way, Goldie's hunches about this case may prove to be all-too true-- this stuff is bad business!

Heloise and Abelard: A Twelfth-Century Love Story

Product Description
It was the greatest love story of the middle ages.

Abelard was a brilliant philosopher in Paris. Heloise, his student and 15 years his junior, was a poet already famous for her learning, a woman with a uniquely powerful insight into her own feelings.

The letters they wrote to each other - some of which have only recently come to light - open a miraculous window onto the story of their affair.

We know about their terms of endearment, about the passion of their lovemaking, of stolen moments in churches, of their erotic play.

The letters tell the story of the birth of their child, of their secret marriage and the violence and tragedy which followed, culminating in a brutal attack in which Abelard was castrated.

In panic and shame the couple separated to continue their lives - and very successful careers - in monasteries. But their love continued through their letters.

'A great story' - The Spectator

'Burge opens up this tale with great sympathy and directness' - Daily Mail

'The most striking part of the book is its modernity ... Burge achieves something truly difficult: he reminds us that, for Abelard and Heloise, their world was as new, risky and unpredictable as ours is.' - Sunday Times

'Burge is excellent at empathy. He keeps you alive to the agony of Abelard ... [and] makes a moving, likeable document of an extraordinary love.' - Scotland on Sunday

'Intelligent, clearly written, and, perhaps inevitably, heart-rending ... Burge is rather in love with Heloise himself: she writes, thinks and feels exquisitely' - Independent on Sunday

James Burge is a television programme-maker turned writer. He has written two acclaimed non-fiction books about the Middle Ages: `Heloise and Abelard' and `Dante's Invention'. He has also written historical novellas starting with `The Murders on the Grand Pont'. He lives in London.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

#Youdunnit: Three Short Stories

Product Description

One crowdsourced storyline, three finely crafted stories by Penguin authors Nicci French, Tim Weaver and Alastair Gunn.

What crime has been committed?

Who is the victim?

And who will solve the case?

Write a short crime story, using plot details crowdsourced on Twitter. This was the challenge we put to three Penguin authors - Nicci French, Time Weaver and Alastair Gunn. How different would the stories be? And how would the authors cope, with so much of the detail out of their hands?

#Youdunnit

Three very different murders and three unique takes on your travel photographer turned reluctant sleuth, Lucinda Berrington. Deep in the suffocating British countryside, the gangland streets of Cape Town or the glossy world of professional cycling, Twitter followers are meeting an unsavoury demise.

Maybe next time you log in you'll wonder...

Are you following them, or are they following you?

This ebook is brought to you free of charge by Penguin, in association with Specsavers.

Look out for other titles by all three authors:

Thursday's Children by Nicci French, follows Blue Monday, Tuesday's Gone and Waiting for Wednesday as the fourth in the Frieda Klein series.

Richard & Judy book club pick Never Coming Back is the fourth David Raker thriller by Tim Weaver, author of Vanished,Chasing the Dead and The Dead Tracks.

Alastair Gunn's debut crime novel, The Advent Killer, is available from Penguin from November 2013, and introduces DCI Antonia Hawkins.
