A reset might work. Hold the on/off button for a count of 30, leave it to do it's thing for a few minutes. DON'T PANIC - it takes a few minutes to come back and repopulate your books.
Edit. How does this not add to the discussion?

My partners kindle broke - he just picked it up and there were lines across the screen and the screen then went blank so he couldnt read it
It was out of warranty as it was aproximatley 18 months old and Amazon were so unhelpful that although i was looking to buy him a kindle fire i am looking at other options as i dont want to be repalcing it every 18 months - how have others found amazon?

I've had my kindle replaced twice (Feb and October this year) I bought it in December 2010. Never a quibble from Amazon. Maybe because I buy a lot of books?

My first Kindle Keyboard broke quickly, within two weeks of receipt. the replacement is 3+ years old (Sep 2010) and still going strong. Having said that I have recently bought a Paperwhite.

There is no saying that because the first one broke after 18 months then a replacement will, also the Kindle Fire is a totally different type of machine to a Kindle e-reader.

How have Amazon been unhelpful? Normally they will offer a discounted price on another Kindle.

I broke my kindle 3 after 3 years and amazon were great sold me a new model paperwhite for 75 or i could have had a refurbished model for 65.
I dont know any other companies with that level of customer service. ps asking them nicely helps.

I also had a very positive experience getting a good discount off a new kindle when my very old one broke

I've had my Kindle with keypad for 3 years this xmas and it's still going strong. Had a little glitch about 6 months ago but a reset cleared it.
