Today we are excited to announce the arrival of the all-new Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Paperwhite 3G.

The new Paperwhite is our best ever e-reader, with a new higher-contrast display, the next generation of our built-in light, a powerful new processor and the latest touchscreen technology.

The new devices are dedicated to reading. Unlike a tablet, Kindle Paperwhite doesn't get heavy as you read. It doesn't interrupt the story with e-mails or other alerts, and the battery lasts for weeks, not hours. It doesn't become unreadable the moment the sun comes out.

Kindle Paperwhite was built without compromise to deliver the ultimate reading experience, and is available for only £109. Reading has never been so enjoyable.

Kindle Paperwhite 3G also comes with free 3G wireless - no hunting or paying for Wi-Fi hotspots, no annual contracts or monthly fees - for only £169.

Both devices can be pre-ordered from today.

Happy reading!
The Kindle Team

I have a pc at home with broadband but it isn't wifi. I don't want wifi for a couple of reasons and I don't want to depend on having to wander the streets looking for hots spots. The 3G version is just too expensive. Can I download books onto my PC and transfer them to a kindle (of any kind)? I have a kindle app for PC's if that makes any difference.

Does anyone know the difference between this paperwhite and last years? I'm wondering whether to upgrade - I would really like it if the light were smoother vision wise.

Denis Powell says:
Louise, you'll have to connect by Wireless once to activate all features, but after that you can add books via USB.

Louise K says:
Is my local library likely to have wifi so I can do this? And finally is a USB lead supplied? Thanks a lot for your help.

Denis Powell says:
You'll have to ask your library but many Waterstones stores have free WiFi as do stores like Tesco (if you have a clubcard).

Yes, you get a USB cord.

A mains charger is useful but if you have a mobile phone charger with a micro-USB plug on the end that will work perfectly. You can charge via the USB port on your computer but some ports may be low powered and take many hours to charge a Paperwhite.

Denis Powell says:
The case being offered with the new Paperwhite is the same one that was being sold with the 1st version. The devices have the same dimensions.

All McDonald's have free wifi as well.

it still boasts the same resolution, at 212ppi, as the previous version. So its not better resolution, just better contrast, which I can only assume is due to an apparently improved light, rather than the screen itself. the shame is their is no visual comparison of the light between vers.1 & 2, so I'd have to hold out to hear peoples remarks on it come October.

I've ordered mine, with free delivery. It's worth the possible returns charge to compare my existing Paperwhite against the new model. You get 30 days to decide if you want to keep it and if you return it it only costs the return postage

I really thought this would have a higher resolution, especially when the kobo aura HD is 265dpi. After ordering the Paperwhite last time and having terrible pink / green shadowing, followed by a replacement that was worse, I think I may hold off on this one until I some feedback.

Jo says:
The US gets them first, they ship on the 1st over there, so still time to cancel my order if the initial reports are not good as we don't ship until the 9th.

ohcomeon says:
It says it displays cyrillic but there are no cyrillic books available on British or US sites. Will hold off until this is resolved.

Still no page turn buttons :(.

Posted on 3 Sep 2013 21:51:20 BDT
I thought it had improved resolution?

John Hopper says:
This is clearly an iterative update and not a major leap forward, which I hope we can look forward to next year. I'm a little disappointed the PW2 has the same size memory as PW1, which is just not enough for me. Even an increase to the memory of the Basic Kindle would have been welcome, though that of the KK/KT perfect - with either of these I would probably have upgraded (definitely for the latter). Without this, I will wait to see if the new software features are included in a PW1 software update in the next few months, in the same way that the KT got an update that included PW1 features like covers, etc. Some of the new features do sound good.

I think those expecting page turn buttons have to accept that this is just not going to happen, especially as the PW1 dispensed with even the home button.

Disappointed that still no re-think on the inclusion of page-turn buttons. They would cost pennies to include (and I'd pay a lot more than pennies), and while clearly not to everyone's taste (obviously not the Kindle design team at the moment) then neither is having to obscure the screen with my finger/hand every few seconds to tap it to turn the page.

Do we all have to conform or could there not be an interface choice - if you are looking to dominate a marketplace, why alienate a proportion of the market, even if we are (presumably) a minority?

Mick says:
Will the improvements to xray and the new page flip function be available as a software update for older paperwhites?
