I don't know whether to sulk or be confused. Probably both. Saw with excitement that the top pinned discussion was an announcement from Kindle about a new update to the "Paperwhite Previous Generation Kindle". I was given mine last year, ie it's the first generation one. The only thing I'd love as an extra is to be able to see all my Collections in the Cloud (cos I'm a neatness freak) so I was SO EXCITED!!! Unfortunately, when I click on the various links they all refer to the 2nd generation PW - when I checked I have version 5.3.9 installed. I'm going off to a corner to cry......

Version 5.4.4 is for your version of the Paperwhite.

Really?? That would be great - I am now switched on to Wi-Fi and waiting with every breath bated....but I wonder where the other four updates are (ie 5.4.0, 5.4.1 etc etc) or am I just being a numpty and they don't run in chronological order?
PD Thanks for your swift reply, DaveyH!

It's a great device but don't expect much from updates.

Sigh. All I want is Cloud Collections. I really love everything else about my PW even though I also still have my much-loved KK. Guess I'll just have to see what happens when the download goes though.

In reply to an earlier post on 7 Mar 2014 21:40:37 GMT
Easier to download to pc and transfer via usb. You'll like the changes. As usual, Amazon confuse things by bizarre numbering.

Oh heck, that's too technical for me - not sure I'd know where to start! I'll just have to be patient....but it's difficult. And glad I'm not being a total numpty over the numbering - thanks for the info!

those other ones were software updates for the PW2 and it just got an update as well 5.4.3 with the 5.4.4 being for the PW1

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you could be waiting for weeks.

The update is great, and does give all the functions of the PW2. I went to the updates page myself and just selected Paperwhite Previous Generation and it's there 5.4.4.

Updating manually is easy, the instructions are on the page. Basically download the update to your Pc. Connect your kindle, copy it into the main folder of your Kindle, disconnect your Kindle and select Update Your Kindle in the settings menu. It's a big update so it will take about 5 minutes to download and 15/20 to update.

If for any reason you copy the update to the wrong folder the Update Your Kindle setting will be grayed out so you can't do anything wrong. It's full proof really.

Sramana says:
Smudgeroonie, as it is a big update, it is better to do it manually to make sure it will download and install without your battery charge running out.

Check this page for step by step instructions

Thanks for the advice, Sramana - I've managed to do it manually. But it was weird - once the download was finished, I had a couple of collections in that I hadn't had for ages. Also, I have a collection called "Currently Reading" which had two books in - after the download it had 10! I've just removed them all manually. Everything else seems ok and at least I've now got my collections in my Cloud too, which is what I really wanted.

Yes I had that as well, several pages of books to remove that had been on my previous kindle touch that I had never downloaded on to the paperwhite.

Oh thanks, Joy, thank goodness I'm not alone. Obviously a glitch in the downloads - never mind, I'll be aware of it for next time!

Bliss - what I've always wanted. I like to organise into collections for manageablilty but that meant I had to have all the books on my kindle (which makes it a bit slow, and it was starting to overflow). And now instead they're all organised and I can see my books, but I only have a few downloaded. My little paperwhite is now flying along.

Admittedly, there was a bit of archeology involved when collections I had created kindles and years ago reared their heads, but 5 minutes of clicking and all is resolved.

And now I can have specialist collections for when I need them (like Discworld etc) and just not have them show all the time. Which is PERFECT. I like to keep my kindle home page to a screen or at most two, so that always limited how far down I could categorise. And now, I have no real limitations.

Ah, the joy of systemising :0)

Another very happy Kindler here.

I also really wanted Cloud Collections & was tempted to buy PW2 just for that, but have too many devices already.

Just updated my PW1 to 5.4.4 & have all I want. Thank you Amazon!!

Ouch. Show all Collections shows all collections I have ever created and deleted on any kindle over the years
The collections like Samples or Reading now are showing loads of books.
Also there are pages of books not in collections at all. Touching a book and selecting Add to Collection again shows all the collections I have had on any kindle, 11 pages of them.
What a lot of deleting to be done. I almost wish I had not upgraded it. Before I had about 8 collections and about 10 unsorted books.

CBRetriever says:
this is really weird - I did a manual update, have synced multiple times plus did an extra reboot and no collections came down from other devices. I'm going to presume it's because i don't use wifi, but just 3G.

Smudgeroonie says:
Joy, I had this too. Just delete your old Collections - you won't delete the books, only the Collection folders. Then, on your home page, underneath the tool bar you'll see three selections: Cloud/On Device, a middle one and a right-hand side one. Make sure the middle one is "My Items (number)" and the right-hand side one is "Collection" - then it should show all your Collections and no loose books. The Collections now have a star in the bottom right hand corner which you can leave or remove. If you press and hold each Collection you get the choice of only showing it in the "Collections" view (middle at the top). Some people just like a few Collections showing on their home page. Hope this helps!

Yes, I have done now. What a way to spend Sunday morning. Also renamed all the collections on my KK, because on the paperwhite it still shows all of those each time I want to put a book in a collection , 4 pages of those to wade through. Now those have a prefix of kk so at least I can see them clearly as some of the collection titles are just too similar. Thanks anyway.
On a lighter note, I wonder if my family have updated yet, guess not as I have not heard any moans and they all have kindles, all on my daughter in law's account.

In reply to an earlier post on 9 Mar 2014 13:09:46 GMT
They will com eventually. When I first updated my paperwhite 2 the same thing happened to me. Then after a few days all the collections I'd ever made came onto my device.
