I feel frustrated that KDK is not yet freely available. As UK customers we can't even buy Kindle applications (only sold in US) , and as far as I know there is small group using KDK beta probably mostly US as well. We can't develop because the KDK is a "closed beta" and its been since beginning, nothing changed, we can't buy or develop applications, such as notepad. Simple and useful yet we can't even have that much... It's just too frustrating...

K.

I'm sorry but I haven't a clue what you're talking about! What applications do you want for heaven's sake? Doesn't Kindle do enough for you? It's an ebook reader - anything else is a bonus not a right or an entitlement.

KDK is the Kindle software development kit. It's a necessity to develop apps on the Kindle although I too would like to see the Kindle to keep it's focus as an e-reader and not get side tracked with apps that are much better suited to my smart phone.

Oh, I don't know. An app that changes those screensaver pictures without hacking the device would probably be welcomed.

@DarrenHF that's what I'm talking about also, there is a lot of possibilities we could use but just aren't there.

@Damaskcat I wouldn't really expect you (non programmer) to understand :) I've already sent a lot of feedback to Amazon regarding the software if they don't release KDK I really hope they will take them into account.

Why? Why KDK is not available freely? I'm getting frustrated too. I've sent request about two months ago-- silence.
I hate this! Does Amazon afraid some geeks from China or India, who will write different software for Kindle in enormous amounts? I just want to play around with my Kindle? Why should i suffer from position of Amazon? The most funniest thing that firmware source code is free to download. Theoretically i can recompile and download software to Kindle. Did anyone such sort of things? They put fckng sticks in wheels!
Sorry for my whining :)

Damaskcat says:
I don't think Amazon are under any obligation to release it myself and any in the terms and conditions it does say that if you alter the software in any way you could be banned from downloading anything from Amazon.

I am also really looking forward to the Kdk. My understanding is that it is all you need to develop java apps but it seems to be a well guarded package. It hasn't even made it to torrents so we could do some advanced learning. Of course it is of little use to us in the UK until apps are allowed on our kindles.

In answer to 'why' a simple example is POWs kindlofax. As an app it would be much more flexible.

Amazon have published the technical docs. A Google should find them but I will put a link up later if no one beats me to it.

I actually now need KDK for a university final year project. I'm developing something special which Id like to keep under wraps.

I'll be ringing Amazon US tomorrow, see if I can get anywhere. Amazon UK had no idea what I was even talking about and linked me to the Kindle PC reader :(

Couldn't give a toss, my kindle is a book I don't want it to do tricks. I've got a tablet for apps can't think of one thing I want the kindle to do other than let me read.

I think the kdk boat has sailed.

We won't see any more development for it. You might be better to pick up an Android developer kit....

Don't want anything but reading from my kindle but I really don't like most of the screensaver images, I'd seriously like to change them for something of my own.

Posted on 22 Mar 2012 22:50:30 GMT
I will never understand this problem with the screensaver images, they are only on when you are not using it. My kindle is not ornamental I don't have it in a frame on the mantelpiece recycling screensavers.

I would too , Isabella
