is reading on the kindle fire just as good on paperwhite? if you were mainly doing reading, would you get a kindle fire just so that you had option of doing other stuff on it?

An eReader is a dedicated reading device. The screen is the same as reading a book. If you buy the paperwhite it's iven got a light built in for those moments when that is useful.

A Tablet does lots of things. There is a saying "jack of all trades, master of none". They are good at doing many things, but not #1. Screens are backlit led and therefore not quite as crisp and sharp, they weigh more, they use battery faster.

This is true of ALL tablets and ALL eReaders - not just Amazon.

Pick where you want to buy your books from. If books cost more for one platform avoid that platform. (I have over 8,000 ebooks now. If the books cost 1p more that's 80 or a new eReader just on buying books at 1p difference. It soon mounts up.) Do some research and compare some books. Don't trust us, we are on the amazon site, so check all the sites.

Bottom line - I like amazon ecosystem, I like the Kindle. I would never buy a tablet to read on.

Paperwhite is the best for reading on due to it's superior screen for that purpose. You can read in all light conditions from dark to bright and sunny. The Fire is a tablet and the screen is very reflective - as are all tablet screens - which makes reading a less pleasant (or unpleasant) experience in bright light.
If you want to do other stuff then it would best to look at the alternatives you have to the Fire from other manufacturers. Make a list of what you you would want the tablet to do and choose one that has the least compromises.

I concur mostly with what's been said. I've always had a Kindle for reading, but I had a Fire HD for Xmas and I can read quite happily on it except in bright sunlight. My advise is to turn down the brightness on the Fire when reading as this makes it easier. I like the fire for apps and games and it's fine to read on too as far as I'm concerned.

I have both a paperwhite and a Fire HD and the paperwhite is by far the better device for reading.
