J. A. Amos says:
Can anyone tell me how to get a VAT invoice for my kindle purchases? All I can find by way of info on Amazon is that "Amazon sends a VAT invoice with all products" but when you buy an electronic product no invoice seems to be generated.

So i went into my Kindle orders to print an invoice. Helpful "Print an invoice" button reveals an invoice which says at the bottom "This is not a VAT invoice" and no VAT is listed.

I'm sure there must be some solution I am missing, as Amazon by not enabling me to print a VAT invoice for a product to which VAT is applied is breaking the law, not to mention their own terms of service for sellers! Any ideas? Or am I just have a blonde moment (it is Saturday after all)

Alex P says:
You should get a printed invoice with the Kindle when it arrives. I certainly got one - it was inside the 'documents enclosed' pouch under the address.

J. A. Amos says:
That will be for the kindle itself. NOT for the books I purchase from the kindle store. Those I cant see how to get a VAT invoice for - its also a requirement for me as we are vat REGISTERED...

I have the same problem. I asked customer services for a vat invoice, and they just pointed me to the terms and conditions, saying kindle books are for personal use only.

I bought a kindle book on computer programming which i should be able to claim back on expenses. Seems kindle is not for business use.

Mmm, Amazon sell all sorts of things that are only for personal use, but they itemise the VAT. I think it is just laziness on their part - the don't even say on the invoice that the total includes VAT. Whoever set up the ebook purchase system probably didn't realise that they weren't VAT exempt the way treebooks are, and didn't allow for it in the computer program.

If you read the terms and conditions for the Kindle and the License Agreement both confirm that the digital content supplied is for personal use only and specifically excludes business use and specifically excludes the provision of VAT invoices for Digital Content.
Forgive me, it has been some weeks since I have read the full documents and therefore can not cite the exact paragraphs.

J. A. Amos, you didn't say whether you were self-employed or not. If you are and have an accountant they surely would be able to sort it out for you, or if you work for a company then surely the accounts department should be able to help.

Is it legal to withhold a VAT invoice, when VAT has been charged?

Posted on 5 Dec 2010 23:21:50 GMT
Mr. A. Neil says:
As it says above Amazon say in the T&Cs that the Kindle can only be used for personal use ... you can only claim back the VAT if you are a VAT registered business, therefore by requesting a VAT receipt it shows you are using the Kindle outwith the T&Cs you agreed to.

I seem to recall somewhere on the Agency thread that a publisher was saying that they are picking up the extra VAT costs for electronic books - which may also explain why Amazon can't / won't issue VAT receipts.

Try telling that to HM Revenue & Customs! It's illegal.

Mr. A. Neil says:
If you have no VAT invoice how do you know you've been charged VAT?

It says so when you order it. It doesn't however say you cant have a VAT invoice until after you have bought it. It specifically says "this is not a VAT invoice". I need one to claim my expenses.

I have asked for a VAT invoice or a refund so I can get the dead tree book instead.

Surely if you are charged for something you are entitled to an invoice for it.

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Dec 2010 01:19:01 GMT
You get an invoice, just not one that details the VAT, which in itself is ok. However refusing to supply a VAT invoice on request is illegal according to HM Revenue & Customs.

Damaskcat says:
However using a Kindle and buying e-books to read on it for business purposes is not within the conditions of sale so as we are all personal customers we do not need a VAT invoice. As long as Amazon are accounting for the VAT to the appropriate authorities that is all that is relevant.

J A Amos - sine no one knows the answer then surely suggetsing you contact CS is the best solution?
