I like to see the cover of a book when I start off, and any quotations / dedications in the preface. I can 'go to' the cover through the menu, but it doesn't seem right to have to - is there any way to make it start there by default?

That's an option that should be in Kindle. I hope it's added in the next update.

For the amount of clicks it takes to go there i can't see Amazon changing it, 3 clicks menu>go to>cover

I agree that it would be nicer if the book started at the cover, although I don't think it's a big deal. However, I do also like to see any dedications, how many chapters there are, etc.

For the number of people who say they want the book to start with the cover there will be an equal number of people who say they want it to start at the first page of text. As has been said it's easy enough to go to the cover and work your way forwards.

Not sure how you know it is an equal number, but if you are right then that is good news as then an option could be included to ensure equitability as it would not seem fair to have 50% get what they want and 50% not. Everyone starts a paper book at the beginning regardless, so it would make sense to keep with this well engrained tradition IMHO.

I don't think it actually matters either way myself - some e-books do seem to open at the cover - or the title page - others seem to open at the first page of text.

Haha - I only asked if it was possible to decide for myself where it started (i.e. in the settings). Apparently not - sorry if anyone feels so strongly about it :)

Yes there should be an option to start at the cover if that's what people - myself included - would like.

Mr. A. Neil says:
@ L Moore ... I thought they always open at last read ... they only open at the beginning, if it's the first time you've opened them?

L Moore - if you've started reading a book it will always open where you were last reading. people here are talking about new books they've just downloaded - some open at the first page of text and others open at the title page or even the cover. Many people want them to open at the cover when first viewed.

The question was not about changing the default, it was about providing an option in preferences.

Callum, options are great, but where do you stop? Some people want the option to have the Progress Bar or not, the clock permanently displayed or not, the battery state permanently displayed or not, the book title permanently displayed or not, the screensaver to be the book cover or not, amongst other things. The more options we have the more difficult it becomes to set up or change the Kindle, and that generates complaints and even more requests for help from Customer Services. That has costs in training and possibly more staff to deal with the extra work.

Every change has to be costed and perhaps Amazon don't want a raft of changes that are unlikely to significantly improve sales. Other ereaders open at the cover and have done for years but Kindles outsell them all.

Just to set the record straight, I'd welcome the book opening at the cover, but the fact that it doesn't just is of no importance to me.

If you download the free app kindle for pc, you have the option to have all books shown by their cover, which is quite pleasant. All the books in your amazon account will be shown there automatically.

The question was also asked in 2010.
