Yesterday I was moving a load of the recent freebie cookbooks into my cooking collection and my kindle became a bit sluggish.
I did a re-start to speed things up again but when it finished all my collections had gone. I've restarted several times (yes my wifi is on) and the collections haven't returned. The collections setting is now greyed out.
The only thing I can think happened is that I hadn't returned to the homepage before I restarted the first time.
Anyone have any suggestions?

If the collections button is greyed out it's like it's de-registered itself. Have you checked online that it is still resisted to your account?

Nope. Will do now. Thank you Beth.
I'll let you know the result.

Thanks Walrus. Yes it's on. I've never turned it off.

hmmmm very odd. i assume you did a reset and not a full factory reset.
what happens if you go to archived items and select add other device collections??? worth a try.
are all your archived books still there?

P E says:
Rather! I'd prefer to not have to refile all 994 titles...;)

You'll have to call CS I hope your kindle gets better soon :(

also have you tried deregistering it and then registering it again

P E says:
I've just tried archiving and resending a book I had in my read collection. No joy. Collections still greyed out.

Archive is fine. Second kindle on the account is fine.

I'll try deregistering and reregistering next.
I'll hold off ringing customer services for a couple weeks til I'm back in the UK if that doesn't work.

I really appreciate all of your help and suggestions, everyone. :)

Yep,but I think it'd be a longgggg email. Lol!

I'm not terribly worried as it's working fine otherwise. I'm perplexed, more than anything.

I'll let you know how I get on, just in case it happens to anyone else.

Thank you again.

you could send them a link to this thread!
do you think it could be something to do with being out of the uk. i don't think i'd try deregistering until you are back in the uk. it might not let you register back on uk.
i bet it's something that customer services can fix from their end with the push of a button

I think it may be because I restarted while I was in the middle of adding things to a collection.

Good point on deregistering. I'll wait. I'm sure they'll sort me out or at least try their hardest to.

At the very least, having to redo my collections will remind me of all my lovely titles.

I lost my collections a few months ago after doing a reset because my Kindle was very slow. CS told me that it was because it was indexing at the time. They advised me to check for this before doing a reset (unless it's frozen obviously). I had to recreate them all - ten pages of them. On a quiet night you can still hear my howls of anguish. Kindle will reindex every six months or so and this can make it sluggish as well as draining the battery.

P E says:
Argh. Thanks Ferret. It could have been indexing. I'm at the 12 month mark.

Oh well. Could be worse.

I lost all my collections doing a reset a couple of months back. Fortunately most of them were set up in my kindle for pc so I was able to add them back, but it took ages to get everything back in the right place (still not convinced they are!) You're right though, there was an upside, I was reminded of some fantastic sounding reads in my to be read list that I'd completely forgotten about (it's why I haven't been spending much time on here or Goodreads recently - far too much to read to waste time surfing). On the plus side, I managed to freeze my kindle a couple of weeks later (dodgy website), and when I did a reset, much to my relief the collections all reappeared. So hopefully it is just a one off for you too.

This happened to me once - I had to organise all the books back into collections again - aaaarrrrggghhh! I emailed customer services, who have apparently done whatever is needed to make sure it never happens again. It did help me weed out some books, but I wasn't feeling so positive at the time... At least you know now it hasn't only happened to you.

Thanks all. I've resigned myself to having to redo the collections and have made a start of it. Got distracted by a book though and started reading.
Hate it when that happens. ;)

You may re-discover some lost gems, P E.

Have done. Lots of samples I've not looked at yet as well.
I've found the silver lining in the cloud. I'd still rather not have it happen to anyone else though.

Took me over a week to sort mine out when it happened so I do sympathise.
