I was in Radio Shack in Orlando yesterday, checking out the Touch and the Fire.
The Keyboard 3G was on 'clearance' with $20 off while stocks last. Looks as if it is going the way of the wi fi version.
Nearly bought a 3G Touch (with ads) at $149 (£99) but I can't quite justify it while my Keyboard 3G is still working perfectly. I've got another week to think about it.

Surely it was inevitable that it would be discontinued at some point.

From what I've seen and read of the KK, it just can't compete with the newer kindle models. I was sort-of tempted by the kindle DX because the screen is huge, but practically it's probably too big to use comfortably for reading and isn't for sale in the UK anymore.

Kindle Touch all the way :)

I love my KK, and wonder about getting another one before they're obsolete. I'm interested to know which features make others think that the KK 'can't compete with the newer kindle models'. I know it doesn't have the same processing power as the later models. But having the KK 3G, which currently allows me to connect to all websites, wherever I may be, feels valuable to me.

It doesn't have the same processing power as the later models. If you like the 3g browser for websites, that's fine. But I use my phone for on-the-go stuff, with 3g network, full colour and much faster loading. My KT browser hardly gets used, now that the novelty has worn off. Even with a faster processor, it's slow and uncooperative.

Different strokes for different folks, but I'm of the philosophy that if something can do it better and faster than older models, pretty soon the older models are going to be museum pieces

It's good we're all different. I don't feel the need to upgrade to the latest technology just because it's there, as long as I can still do what I need to do with older models. For instance, I still use a 2003 Nokia pay-as-you-go mobile. It can't do much by today's standards, but it's extremely reliable and perfect for phone calls and texting, and that's all I ask it to do. So the KK 3G at least lets me browse on the move - even if slowly, and even if not in colour. It's a bonus to be able to do that. What I most want it for is reading books. As for my desktop PC, I have just bought a new one, as the 2003 Windows XP processor was struggling, and I do need to run the latest software.

The newest gadgets (or software) aren't always improved. Take Microsoft Office. I much preferrred Office 2003 to Office 2007/2010. Some parts are improved; basic navigation of menus is poor.

But they'll need some for spares surely? When I bought my lovely KK3G last Oct I took out the 3 year warranty so if it breaks in September 2014 what will it be replaced with?

Thanks Brian - great help you are!

I don't mind the £89 Kindle - although I prefer the keyboard as it's easy for me to use. But I hate the touch screen ones - in the same way that I hate touch screen phones. Yeuk!

The K3 is better for me than the Touch which is why I bought a refurbished spare recently. I don't find the processor to be prohibitively slow.

It seems a bit soon to be shelving it anyway, it hasn't been released here for 2 years yet. What worries me is people who want 3G but don't want a touch screen. The basic is nice, but wifi only.

Suze, I think we'll see an increasing number of people who have a tablet (possibly a Fire) and a Kindle who may find a 3G MiFi device useful(or Mobile phone with a tethering facility). Mine costs me £10 per month Pay-As-You-Go, but I let it lapse during some of the winter months so the average monthly cost is somewhat less than that.

The free 3G on the KK is nice but less so on the Touch due to it's limitation to Amazon and Wikipedia. I can use my WiFi only Touch anywhere I can get a 3G signal.

Denis, the 3G on the Touch not being as good as on the KK is one of the things I was thinking about. A few people have complained about it and even returned the touch and gone to a KK instead. I personally don't care, as I didn't bother with the 'net on the KK anyway. Never think to listen to music on the kindle either. I really do just read my books on it.

I love my KK 3G not sure if I want to trade up to a touch. My case broke and I couldn't find my kandle, I was forced to read on my iPad last night when I was having a bout of insomnia. I kept accidentally turning the pages. I think that the touch would be easier as it wouldn't be as heavy as the iPad but I am still undersided
