why do some books listed in "free books", when selected, show as not being free

Posted on 26 Jun 2012 09:23:27 BDT
Because there's no such thing as a freebie in life.

Kindle's free promotions are timed for anywhere between one and five days. When the promotion ends, the title stays in the free charts for a few hours until Amazon updates the system and puts a price back on it.

Speaking of free books, B-spine: fractured by Cam Winstanley is currently free (although might not be a few days time). It's by my son so I'm bound to say this but it's actually a very good sci fi thriller.

The official Amazon blurb says on the "Why is this not free anymore"
Amazon Bestsellers lists are updated hourly. Between list updates, the price of an item may change from being free to having a price and vice versa. Although the item's price changes immediately, the list and its rankings stay the same until the next hourly update.

I seem to have read that sometimes the authors drop the price for a set period of time. Sometimes you just have to grab things while they are there. As shops say "when they're gone they're gone"

Happened to me and I bought them without realising . Oh well.

There has certainly been proof last week of how well the making free or making cheap of a title works.

The Agatha Raisin omnibus that is sat just below Shades of Grey in bestsellers was made 99p for a day. This launched it into the bestselleler top 5. Good marketing and also a good buy if you were lucky enough to get it in time.

Books can be set free for 5 days out of every 90 if they are in the kdp select scheme. The time is set by US pacific time which will begin around 9-10 am here, often books are at the end of their free period in the US, from the previous day, and still show as free here - then they end. It has caused a lot of confusion when people add books to the free list too early in the day.

w-w says:
It depends if the author is part of the kdp select scheme, other books can be made free permanantly if they are already available free on another site, such as 'smashwords'

It is very annoying when I get an email saying books are free at 7:00 am that day and then find that although I look at then immediately I get the email - which may be only minutes after 7:00 - that many of the books are no longer free!

Maybe the e-mail takes a while to create? If this is the only annoyance in your life then maybe you need a few more problems to keep your mind off the trivial!

In reply to an earlier post on 28 Sep 2014 07:22:34 BDT
Which bit of my post did you fail to understand? The bit about *Free at 7am GMT* or that I checked the books before the time they are stated as being free? No, they were not free after that time either.
Perhaps you should follow your own advice if you can only add useless trivia to the post!

Damaskcat says:
Prices change minute by minute. What is free now may not be free a minute from now. So what?

In reply to an earlier post on 28 Sep 2014 09:20:27 BDT
Your posts do not line up and the second introduces completely new information so it was easy to not understand what you actually wanted to say, rather than what you actually said. We are unable to read your mind.
