I have 2 KKs and last week bought my second Touch, so glad I did as the Touch has now disappeared, but still ordered a Paperwhite today. I have thousands of ebooks and use my Kindles as storage devices as well as having specific types of books on each one. At least if i don't get on with the Paperwhite (I get migraines) then i still have both Touchs, both with a lighted case.

Apart from the light - I don't think it's better.

It hurts the eyes to stare at white for a long time and I like being able to put a book on text to speech and turn the sound down so that the Kindle turns the pages for me.

Yes I agree, its all depends on how it all works. I won't hesitate to send the Paperwhite back if its not for me. Its a real pity they have removed the Touch as he only other option is the basic Kindle. The paperwhite would be my currently reading Kindle as the 2GB storage is half all the other Kindles I have which are 4GB storage. I also like the text to speech as well which all my others Kindles have.

This has once again proven how impatient I am. When it was released in America I was willing to pay more to buy an imported one on eBay with no warranty. Now that it's here I bought it instantly with release day delivery. I've been waiting for a Kindle that could be seen in the dark for a really long time. No case with a light on it, no lamp, no holding torch in mouth, no inconvenience. Thanks Amazon!

Well this is all they are saying for now.

"Coming later this month - Kindle Owners' Lending Library - Read for Free
Kindle Owners' Lending Library - with an Amazon Prime membership, Kindle owners can choose from more than 200,000 books to borrow for free--as frequently as one book per month, with no due dates--including current and former top sellers in the Kindle Store and all 7 Harry Potter books".

Have had "Prime" for some time now as I shop on Amazon a lot, and saves me a fortune. So this is an extra bonus for me..

I'm going to skip this generation. I like the idea, but the uneven light would drive me nuts. They'll have got it right by next year.

I would not be surprised if there is not an upgraded version of the Paperwhite, that comes out next spring, with audio facility and any issues ironed out..

Sarah O says:
I had an initial "should I shouldn't I" dither over whether to get rid of the Touch and get the Shiny New Model...but, well, honestly, I think I would regret it. No audio, that black and white display would drive me nuts. My little LED case light already hurts my eyes to use, so having them behind the screen where they can't fully be turned off would not be enjoyable for me.

Saying that, the way the screen responds is going to be completely different, since it's capacitive and not infra-red responsive, so that's far more tempting than some silly little lights. If they develop a model sans light with the same kind of screen, I might have to upgrade.

Quick question on this before I click pre order and then find a pretty case :) I have a K3 and I do love it, the main love of kindles for me over the other LCD devices out there is the e-ink as it doesnt cause eye strain, does the new paperwhite use the e ink?? sorry if this has already been asked and answered somewhere, appreciate any responses.

@Shelly: to change the colour in future, it'll probably be cheaper to get a skin rather than a new device! I like the ones from Decalgirl as not only do they have about a gazillion to pick from but they also do a matte/satin finish which means no reflections. They are incredibly easy to apply, resilient and come off cleanly (but are not reusable in that they stretch when removed)

Cameraman says:
I'm a bit confused about the light. Is it on all the time or can it be turned off completely? The link Denis attached seemed to indicate it was on all the time. Is it really necessary to have a light on (even only slightly) in bright daylight or a bright room?

In reply to an earlier post on 12 Oct 2012 15:08:55 BDT
Paul says:
You will be able to turn it on and off and adjust its brightness level.
