Celia, if you purchased it within the last 30 days you can return it for a full refund.

In all fairness to Amazon, the product page for the Fire makes no mention of Skype or a camera so I'm not sure why you would imagine it had either. It's a lower price than the HD because it has less hardware. No camera, less storage, no stereo speaker system, less well specified screen etc.

This seems illogical, but my Skype address book (which is on my desk top) will not transfer to my Kindle fire - I get various other people but no one that I know! I don't really want to spend hours writing in the addresses as "new contacts". How can I transfer my address book 'en bloc'? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. - a very frustrated John W!

I eventually found the Skype icon under Apps, tapped on it, and the screen just went black. This happened several times. Why is this happening -- could it be weak Wifi signal?

The Kindle Fire does not have a camera.

Or a microphone.

Skype doesn't work on it for those two reasons.

G P Stoker has the 8.9" which does have Skype but I can only suggest contacting Customer Services. I've never used Skype on my HD.

I bought a new Kindle Fire HD and it doesn't have skype installed and I can't download it. It says my device is not compatible. But I thought you can get it with Fire HD. Any advice or help?

Denis Powell says:
If you have a new Fire HD it doesn't have a camera or microphone so Skype isn't possible. The only Fires that can use Skype are the previous generation HDs and the new HDXs.

Hi Jenny
I had the same problem, Kindle Fire HD (UK) and unable to find Skype preinstalled and not able to download from the Store. I've contact Kindle support and the news isn't good .. then new generation Kindle Fire HD's don't have a camera (they were removed on this model..for some crazy reason!!) .. but if you have an older generation Kindle Fire HD you should have a camera. The only option is to upgrade!

Denis Powell says:
It's Amazon's poor naming of devices that has caused this confusion. The new HD isn't a replacement for the previous HD at all so, nothing has been removed.

The new HD is a replacement for the 2nd Generation Fire which also had no Camera or Microphone.

It doesn't ,I just purchased one and there was no skype, and I went to amazon apps and there was no skype there either,so I went to amazon shop and the skype apps in the shopping are not compatible with the new kindle fire HE.So it doesn't do what amazon says it does.

You answered a post 18 months ago. When that post was written it was perfectly correct.
Now (just like then) the base cheap model of the Fire does not do Skype. It has no camera.
If you want a camera and Skype, then you have to buy one of the more expensive models.

You can return your device to Amazon if you bought it in the last 30 days.
Before buying something again, I would recommend you read what it is capable of....

I would have used exactly that word about Skype myself. VoiP phone calls are much easier and free.

G. Heywood says:
Skype offers VOIP (and video OIP), and skype to skype is free too. It is also fairly platform agnostic, which is why it is so commonly used.

I'm not interested in video calls - never have been - which is why I prefer VoiP - which is free anyway.

Denis Powell says:
If you have the latest Fire HD, that has no Camera or microphone, hence Skype isn't possible.

Is your Kindle connected to the wifi system? If not, it will need to be.
