If you mean the serial number - it's on your Kindle itself in the settings page.

When I've alerted my US friend to a book I've seen listed free here, he's always been able to 'buy' it there too. Why would Amazon not have the same books listed on both? Do we not (more-or-less) share a language?

yeah, but we often don't share the same publishers/licensing agreements.

and there are books available to US residents that aren't available to UK residents and the opposite holds true too

Oh, I see. Pot luck then. I can see why it might not be viable to move crates of treebooks around the world, but e-books are pretty portable - you'd think the author/publisher would want as wide a possible selling-field. Commerce is a mystery sometimes!

well, the problem is that they were often tied to the original paper publishing contracts as you noted above - thus if company A owns it outright, but then licenses it to company B in the UK, they can't legally sell the ebook version in the UK (part of the contract is usually a no competition clause), but they can in the US and anywhere else that it hasn't been licensed.

I'll often see, in France shopping on amazon.com, two different prices for the same ebook, sometimes differing by as much as 9USD - I obviously buy the cheaper one

Interesting, CRB. And do you switch 'allegiance' between US and UK willy-nilly as the poster above does to enable you to buy from both?

no, but I do have one kindle registered to amazon.fr and the other three in the household to amazon.com (I'm an american living in France) - however my amazon.com kindles are set to a country of France as I'm one of those people who try to do things legally

CBRetriever,

Are you amazon.com kindles illegible for the book of the day discounts?

CBRetriever says:

do you mean the deal of the day?

it's a bit complicated - the amazon.com deal of the day isn't discounted for me, but whatever the amazon.fr deal of the day is is discounted on both amazon.com and amazon.fr for me, so I check the amazon.fr site and then buy it on amazon.com.

Today it's Ready Player One by Ernest Cline at either .89 euros on amazon.fr or $1.31 on amazon.com
On amazon.com the Daily Deal is The Deal by Adam Gittlin and it appears as $7.21

The other day the New Stephen King book was under $3.00 and I made the mistake of listing it in the preice reduced thread on their forum = lots of unhappy americans and a few happy french residents.

So I have to go illegal and change my country settings to the US to get any sort of deal while in Belgium :(

Why? If you're registered to http://amazon.co.uk, you can still get their deal of the day. I'm living in France but registered to the US site, but the US daily deals usually just apply to US residents.

Posted on 6 May 2012 18:14:38 BDT
I am registered to the US site. I can't register to the UK as I need a UK billing address. US deals are not applicable because my country settings is set to Belgium. I think if I register it to France, I won't get the daily deal of the Amazon France either.

probably not and I've found ereaderiq.com tends to give inaccurate price reductions as well

I hate when I get the emails giving what look to be good deals on books, only to click on them, and they're not reduced at all.

If I register my kindle to a uk address, do I need to have a credit card linked to that address? I'm looking to buy a book that's only available on .co.uk but am a us resident. I'm sure I could use a friend's address as a new location, but I would need to bill the book to my us credit card

Posted on 7 May 2012 07:03:48 BDT
I think you should as someone mentioned before in this or another similar thread.

I agree with Siddarth - I'd imagine that amazon would require a credit card billing address in the same country you're trying to register to - it's how they determine US residence when people want to buy apps for the Kindle Fire, after all

On the other hand, amazon is always suggesting I could switch my account to amazon.fr even though I have a US credit card with a US billing address. My shipping address is in France, as is my email address and they shipped my KK2i to France.

CBRetriever,

Is it legal if I have a US billing address (which I have) to register my kindle to the United states?

you may be able to do so - it's worth a try
as afar a legality, that's questionable - they may eventually ask you to verify your address in the US if your IP isn't there
however, there are a lot of books that ae cheaper if you're in europe ...

It's nothing to do with your credit card in this case and everything to do with where you are physically resident. Not resident in the UK - can't buy from the UK site - simple.

I am resident in the UK and have bought from the US site using my UK credit card and a US address. I haven't done it for over a year, though, so things may have changed. It's also best to read the T&Cs first if you are going to try it.

Ok, I have contacted Amazon.com through live chat and here what the rep. said concerning changing the country settings:

"That's a goof question. If you already have a U.S billing address for one of your payment methods, you can still make the change to the country settings to be able to get the content. As long as it is your valid address, you can change it."

So it appears that if one has a US based billing address, he/she can attach the kindle to the US instead of the country he/she is physically living in.

How rude!

I didn't spot that, Willber - you would be a great proof-reader.
