What I did was sell this piece of... on eBay. With no upgrades, support or information from Amazon in three months I lost patience. Bought an iPad. Sure you can't customise it to the sane degree but, you know what...? It works, the unit and the apps all work a miracle.

Ok. I have the little white cross problem from time to time. This happens when I am using a '3' 3G dongle plugged in to a WiFi type of adapter. My Blackberry mobile finds the network no problem and checking my WiFi data usage app I can see that it is definitely using WiFi and not its own 3G to access emails and the web etc. The Kindle Fire HD is connected to this same router but sometimes the little white X appears from the start and sometimes after a while. The only cure is the restart the router and that usually cures it.

At home the Kindle connects fine to my main Netgear router BUT has the same white X problem when trying to connect to either of the two WiFi 'extenders' I also use about the house (again the Blackberry has no problem)

Yes, you can do that, so long as your cell phone uses 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, on 2.4ghz frequency, you could use it as a hotspot and provide access for the Kindle.

Your a fool its a fantastic product.

PROBLEM SOLVED

The pad needs to connect via wpa psi

IPhone users
simply reset your wireless settings on phone...done

galaxy s2/ android ect
settings
more....
tethering and hotspot
configure Wi-Fi hotspot
under security select wpa psk
enter a numerical password like 1234567890
save

turn on portable wireless hotspot

now when you connect it will say you have to log in to continue and will open a window, just close it and your good to go. all sounds long winded but takes 2 minutes.

this is not the kindles fault, different devices connect differently hence the multiple options on your phone.

oh yeah Amazon........... your welcome.

Which phone? Which operating system? Which carrier? Do they allow the phone to work as a hotspot? Do you have a data plan with your phone, or just voice and text?

I've had the same problems as all u other guys trying to teather iPhone 4 getting the WiFi symbol with a cross . Phoned Amazon customer services who were polite but useless just said an engineer would look into it etc etc (uk call centre was in Manilla !) Anyway last ditch attempt of resetting network settings on my iPhone worked however had to be well out of range of my home WiFi network as kindle automatically connects to this.
IPhone 4 ios 6.1.1, Bluetooth on. Personal hotspot on. WiFi on but used 3g network.
Kindle fire hd 7.2.3 Bluetooth off. Wireless on.
I will try again tomorrow to see if it still works.
Another point to note is that sometimes a BT FON wireless router in the local vicinity can hijack your wireless connection on both iPhone and kindle. Just go into the wireless connections menu on your device and set them to "forget this network".
Hope this can be of help as I know how frustrating this is. I have previously teathered my kids 2 ipad s and an iPod all at the Same time whilst travelling down th M6for for 5 hours! With no problems.

WAKE UP AMAZON IF A 40 yr old CONSTRUCTION WORKER CAN FIGURE THIS OUT WHY CAN'T YOUR TECH BOFFINS!!!

Adam Bennett says:
The old Kindle works with free 3G as the book files you're downloading are tiny - the bandwidth costs for Amazon to offer this service are a miniscule percentage of what they would face if they offered the same service in a world of videos, images, music and games.

I get he white cross frequently, but am still able to access web, download music etc - is there a resource anywhere which states exactly what that white crss means?

My iphone 5 connects my two kindles (keyboard and touch) via hotspot no problem - unlike my BT hub - Amazon have a problem with BT (they told me) I have an ipad which is, in my humble opinion, far superior in every which way to any other tablet/kindle fire etc. and also connects to my iphone every time :)

I have several different e-ink Kindles, Sony eReader, a Sony MP3 player, a Sony BluRay player, a Fire HD and an Asus tablet. I've never had any problems connecting through my BT hub that a reboot of the hub hasn't cured. When that's needed I can't connect my Laptop either. Amazon may have a problem with BT but I certainly don't, nor do any of my Kindles.

My Kindle Fire won't connect to ant WiFi hotspots - not on iPhone or any phone. At the top of my Fire screen it shows a completely full and strong WiFi signal, but there is a little white x. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this???

ChrisJ says:
Have you restarted it? Long hold on the power button for a slow count of 20 seconds ignoring any screen flashes and changes that may occur. Then release and leave it to recover for 2 mins. Then turn it on again.
