I'm not bothered about video , I just want to make a skype CALL from my fire ( non hd)- can it be done?

In reply to an earlier post on 14 Mar 2013 12:02:35 GMT
@AS: The FIRE does not have a camera so no SKYPE is not included in the bundle. You need to upgrade to a Kindle FIRE HD which has camera and mike.

That's Skype for Android phones, not Kindle Fire HD.

You don't need to get Skype for Kindle Fire HD - it comes built-in.
The pointer to a different source to get Skype for Kindle was JUST IN CASE its possible to install it on a Fire (not HD). SO far, however, no-one has reported that it is possible to do this.

By the way: 2 billion minutes a day on Skype:

I have Skype on my Kindle Fire HD and also on my PC. My problem is that they don:t seem to sync. I am signed in with the same account, but it almost like two separate conversations are going on. Once it did sync, so I am very confused.

Posted on 14 Apr 2013 07:13:04 BDT
ChrisJ says:
What do you expect to sync??
Skype is a peer to peer system (client to client). There is no server where conversations are stored to allow things to sync.
When someone contacts you, all Skype systems should alert you. The one you use is up to you, and that one will keep the conversation.

The piece that might sync are Contacts. When you add a new user to your contact list, then that person MIGHT be available to other clients. I say might, as i have never closely checked...

TokyoLiz says:
Excuse my ignorance!!

It seemed to the uneducated Skype user that I obviously am that I should be able to see all Skype conversations with one contact on the same page. I do not understand why messages I have sent from my Kindle remain unread. It used to be that messages were not delivered unless both parties were on line, but that hasn't been so for some time now.

I agree that conversations etc. are not recorded centrally or synced, but it's not quite true that "there's no server". Skype servers set up and facilitate the peer-to-peer communications, and I think I read that for conference calls with more than 2 people, calls DO actually go through Skype's servers, although they claim they don't record them. As Wiki says, "Unlike most other VoIP services, Skype is a hybrid peer-to-peer and client-server system. It makes use of background processing on computers running Skype software".

As for contacts, they definitely ARE stored on Skype's servers with your account. One result is that if you do a completely clean installation on a brand new PC, then just log in with your Skype name, all your contacts will automatically appear.

Re. the Skype on non-HD Fire - as I've mentioned before, the ordinary Fire doesn't even have a microphone let alone a camera, and it doesn't have BlueTooth so I don't see any way of adding an external microphone. So even if you did install Skype, you couldn't even make audio-only calls and would be restricted to sending text messages.

TokyoLiz says:
No problem with the contacts. They are all there when I log in either on my Kindle or my PC. OK, a question. For my contact to be able to read my messages sent from my Kindle, do they have to be on line at the same time as I am online on my kindle? It used to be like that when I sent messages from my PC, but now they can be read even when I am offline.

The answer appears to be "Yes and No"! From the Skype help pages:
"If a contact is offline, then your instant message won't be delivered to them immediately. The message is saved locally (on your device) and will be delivered as soon as both you and the recipient of your message are online at the same time."
So, as I understand it you can "send" a message even when they're offline, but it's held on your local machine, and won't be received until they're online AND you're online on the SAME machine. That explains why you can't see it on other machines, and it won't be sent if you contact someone later on a different machine.

edit: I haven't actually tried this to confirm, so it's possible the help pages are not up-to-date and it works differently!

TokyoLiz says:
That's a shame, because that is no longer true for the PC version

TokyoLiz says:
Well, now all my messages have synced!!!!!! I have both my machines on and my contact is online too, and I can read our complete conversation on both machines. The difference is that my contact can read my new messages sent from my PC even if I am offline, but cannot do the same with messages sent from my Kindle.

We've currently started to use Skype at work (we previously used Microsoft Communicator) and it does appear that way to me Liz; i.e. I send a colleague, who's offline, a message, if they logon before I do they don't see the message until I also logon. It may be that there'a a setting we haven't 'tweaked', but that's the way our setup currently works.

Has anyone else got a message on heir account when you click on 'Profile' saying you have so many free video calls remaining before you can pay for premium?

ChrisJ says:
Sounds like your account has been given some free pieces of the normally paid for options. Have you taken out a SkyDrive or Office 365 account recently?

In reply to an earlier post on 2 May 2013 16:58:00 BDT
No, but I have just started to use my new Kindle Fire HD.

I found this online...

The notification you are reading is not intended to be "video calls", but "video messages". Video calls (one to one) are free with Skype. Video message is a new Skype feature, which allows you to leave a video mail (rather than a voicemail) when the contact you try to video call is offline. Being you a free user, you have the possibility to send up to 20 video messages. If you like the feature and want to continue using video messages after the 20 are over, you would need to purchase a Premium subscription.
I hope this clarifies."

All sorted :) thanks for your quick reply though.

Kindle Fire HD 7",

I`m expecting a new grandson shortly and want to be able to see him regularly on Skype.
Will the 7" Fire HD be suitable for this? Also what do I have to buy separately, ie. the charger etc.

In reply to an earlier post on 17 Jun 2013 07:57:18 BDT
Denis Powell says:
The Fire HD should be fine.

You may already have a charger that you can use. If you have an e-ink Kindle the charger you use for that will be okay. Many mobile phone chargers will work as well. All they need to have is a micro-USB plug on the end.

The Quick Charger you can buy from Amazon will do the job a little speedier and can often be obtained at a discounted price if bought at the same time.

Hollycat says:
OK thanks. I`ll try the mobile charger first.

I am so fed up that I cannot get skype on my Kindle Fire. I bought myself the Fire this year and the HD for my hubby as he likes videos, I did not imagine that in this day and age I would not be able to skype. I even had skype on a much cheaper tablet before.

In reply to an earlier post on 9 Jul 2013 10:37:46 BDT
@Celia: OK, but what do you expect to get in return for your comment? It's rather like buying a two door car, driving around in it and then complaining loudly "it's only got 2 doors."
