I don't think Tui's crazy. Someone (not a friend) had a go at me recently with the old chestnut about vegetarians not realising that the animals that are bred for meat wouldn't be here if it wasn't for meat eaters. Granted there are philosophers who take the view that any life is better than no life, but where's the advantage to anything that is only here to be killed at our convenience? Animal predators don't deliberately breed and confine their prey, nor do they cut the fins off sharks and throw them back to die just for the sake of a profitable delicacy. They take their chance on being able to catch their food. Mankind has the ability to reason, so whether or not we eat meat is a moral choice. I'm not trying to convert anyone, just don't imagine that what any of us choose to do is value free. Yes, on the proverbial desert island where it came down to kill for food or starve, I'd probably eat the cuddly animal but here and now, I don't have to.

Last time I was on St Mary St at night it was Hallowe'en. I'd been to Cafe Jazz with friends, none of us in the first bloom of youth.
A young man dressed as a vampire grinned at us and said 'Oh, I get it, you've come as old people!' Had to laugh...

I have to venture there tonight Isabella - it's my son's stag night.
They've had the "daft" one in Poland so tonight the Dad's can tag along.
It's a flipping zoo late on.
I prefer a nice quiet chat in Copa.
I used to watch Mike Harries's Root Doctors in Cafe Jazz years ago. They were superb!

Tui Allen says:
Isabella - you speak great sense there. I dislike ferocious vegetarians. I resisted becoming vegetarian for years because my daughter was a "ferocious" evangelical vegetarian trying to convert me so of course I resisted. (Probably stupid of me) People can make their own choices. If I were forced to kill to live I'd might even do it, though I hope I never have that to face. I just made my own choice, for the sake of the animals, to eat the great variety of delicious vege food instead and my health does not suffer in the least so I intend to continue.

My bloke eats meat and I don't even try to stop him. I even occasionally cook meat for him but luckily he's happy to also eat a lot of my vege meals or barbecue his own meat.
I'm far angrier about the shark-finning industry than I am about the New Zealand meat industry, because we are now heading towards shark extinction which has nightmarish environmental consequences. The NZ meat industry is causing enviro-problems but I don't think they'll let cattle go extinct :)

Our hunters culling deer here for venison and possums for fur, are actually protecting our native flora and fauna in the process, because these introduced animals are so harmful to the native birds and trees. I still feel sorry for those possums and deer though, because it's not their fault. It was we humans who introduced them here in the first place. The problem is very complex really. No simple answers.
It's the old story. We just need to THINK a little and try to be rational about things.

Isabella says:
Your OH sounds much like mine, enjoying the occasional meat meal without any hassle from me but happy to eat veggie most of the time. The problem is, as you say, that there are no simple answers. The world is in thrall to the law of unintended consequences and the accidental or deliberate inability of people to think.

A very profound last sentence that was, Isabella.
