questions regarding crashing and restarting?

I have a kindle keyboard and it is in a "booklet" type cover.

Occasionally my kindle has frozen so I have restarted it out of curiosity I checked the indexing and there were no books indexing.

(I check the indexing every so often, I don't know why I think just because I can)

On Friday my Kindle started acting strangely all of a sudden it crashed, shut itself down and restarted, after restarting it was very slow etc, when I checked the indexing, there were books indexing

The three questions I am asking really are these:

1) When restarting the kindle yourself do the files need to be indexed?

2) If the kindle crashes why does this require the books being indexed if they don't need it when restart manually?

3) Can anyone give me an idea why the kindle would crash itself and why would having a cover cause any problems?

Clagg says:
It won't re-index after a restart but will re-index every six months,

Use the Kindle without the cover for a few days. If you get no problems contact Amazon CS for an exchange. Some of the old covers caused random crashes.

Edit: oooh my no vote troll groupie has found me. Oh no.

Denis Powell says:
Amanda, just to add a little to Clagg's post, the Kindle, like any other computer, will freeze or crash occasionally.

There are various reports from posters to say that once they have over a certain number of books on their Kindles the device will slow down and tend to freeze more often. Mine certainly appeared to slow from about 800 books onwards until at 2,300 it stopped working altogether until I removed the majority of them.

More recently posters are reporting problems with Keyboard Kindles when the number of books in Manage Your Kindle exceeds around 3,500 and they turn wireless on. Some now transfer books via USB.

I think problems occurred with Amazon covers but I'm sure someone will know more about that than me.

Hippocratia says:
I think there were some problems quite a while back with the contacts on the old kindle keyboard covers, however Amazon have changed the covers since then. It was a long time ago, as I got my kindle and cover for Christmas 2010, and it was one of the new ones.

Willber G says:
That is correct, and it was only the non-lighted covers. It's possible, though, that some of the old ones are still knocking around.

I still have one of the older covers on my Kindle.
It works perfectly for 3 or 4 months, and then spends a couple of weeks crashing the Kindle.
So I remove the Kindle and let it go nekkid for a bit. Once I put the two together again a month or so later, they play nicely for another couple of months! :-)
