I live in Spain and want to buy a Kindle Fire HD for my sister who lives in Ireland (where it is not sold) Can she change the language to English and also can she then use the UK Amazon website to purchase books, films etc.

Denis Powell says:
Anna, yes she can change the language to English, but she'll need to register with for eBooks unless she lives in Northern Ireland. The UK site only supplies digital content, such as apps, games and ebook to UK residents. The reason it's not sold in Ireland is that there are features that won't work there. If you want your sister to have a fully functioning Tablet then she needs something other than a Fire in my opinion.

Ah I aee. The reason I wanted to get it for her is because she´s going to work in Vietnam and I thought it would be a good way to keep i touch (skype, email etc) also she´s a big reader and film buff so I though it would be ideal. Presumably if it doesn´t work in Ireland it´s not going to work in Vietnam..!! I thought the idea of these things is that they are portable :-)

Also - and I apologise in advance because this shows a huge lack of techiness - but how do you actually access the internet through the Kindle HD? For example do you need to have wireless broadband at home or go somewhere where there is Wifi? Can you connect it to a dongle?

Denis Powell says:
Anna, the Fire is a somewhat specialised tablet and unlike most other brands. The operating system, although Android, is heavily modified to make it work seamlessly with the Amazon ecosystem. As a result it only works fully within the Country it's registered in. In Vietnam your sister should be able to download ebooks but little else from Amazon while there. It's a WiFi only device so you'll need to connect it to a WiFi hotspot or router to connect to the internet. You'll need that to register it anyway.

You can't connect a Dongle to the Fire but you can buy MiFi devices that will connect to the 3G network and act as a portable WiFi hotspot that the Fire and other WiFi devices can connect to. Otherwise, to browse the Internet, you need a WiFi hotspot such as you'll find in many pubs, restaurants and hotels, at a price. Using a MiFi overseas would incur "roaming" charges so it may be worth buying an unlocked version and buying local sim cards.

I see Denis, so would something like the Nexus 7 be a better idea? (sorry Amazon for mentioning the unmentionable)

Denis Powell says:
Anna, I hear good things about the Nexus but have no experience of it myself. I have an Asus tablet that certainly does some things better than the Fire, but I find the Fire HD does what I need it to very well indeed.

Anna, I too live in in Spain with a Spanish address for my credit card. I bought a UK kindle fire HD and had problems getting apps (even free ones) from the kindle UK site. I have family in the Uk and Mastercard happily gave me the option of a 'second address' for my account- this address was of a UK family member ( with their agreement) and I now find that recognises that address and works fine, even though I am still in Spain!

Damaskcat says:
This may not work indefinitely as Amazon will eventually recognise your IP address is in Spain.

The Spec on the Spanish Kindle did not include English as one of it's language options.

well it was one of the options - all the Kindle Fires released in the International Kindle Stores supported Spanish, English (two kinds), German, Italian and French and they've since added Japanese

I bought my KF in Spain and selected English. To get the free apps, I re-registered it to (same log-in etc), then re-registered it back to to get english books etc. When back in the uk, I am able to get the english based apps.

if you can provide an address in the UK

In reply to an earlier post on 1 Dec 2013 18:45:05 GMT
I think that if you had an English billing address, ie, with an English bank, then yes it is possible to register it with amazon uk. But if you dont & your bank & billing address is spanish, then I dont think its possible. This is the case for me, but I have managed perfectly well for nearly a year. Hope this helps.
