I've never gone through airport security but some people say they are fine, and others say turn off your kindle completely, which does sound logical to me. Sorry, I can't be more help, but somebody will be along soon who can help you properly.

Hi DP don't panic - your Kindle wont suffer. You can put it through the x-ray machine quite safetly. I have just come back from Austria by plane and had no problems and this isn't the 1st time I have taken the Kindle abroad.
I didn't turn it off.

My KK has been through a great many x-ray machines including some very dodgy airports in India and Africa with absolutely no ill effects.

I've never shut it off. I expect it's even gone through 'awake' on more than one occasion as I often read it while I'm waiting in queues.

My one has been through airport scanners plenty of times over the past year & with no problems at all.

My kk has gone through airport scanners twice in the last two weeks with no ill effects. It was turned off fully and in a 7day folio cover inside my hand luggage bag.

X-Ray machines don't damage digital cameras or memory cards or Kindles.

The only damage that can occur to the memory card is by magnets. Airports use this to check the metal on person when you pass through the special 'doors' or sometimes with hand-held metal detectors. It is actually recommended to let the camera go through X-Rays to avoid magnets.

Kindles are perfectly safe. On or off, nothing will happen.

Your memory card could not have been erased by the x-ray scanner, something else did that.

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1035.shtm

"None of the security equipment - neither the machines used for checked baggage nor those used for carry-on baggage - will affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed - slides, videos, photo compact discs or picture memory cards."

EDIT: OOoh No votes already? Grow up.

I'm pleased to hear all this information as I am flying down to Southampton in a couple of weeks and will of course have my Kindle with me :-) It will be so good to carry hundreds of books with me and virtually no weight....quite different from previous visits when I always took a paperback and then bought several in Southampton to read while I was there, leaving them with my family when I was coming home :-)

I may asked before but have forgotten, how do you switch off your Kindle totally? I have the K4 but I cannot see a switch off button, so, I never turn it off totally. Thanks for helping.

Hold the slider for a few extra seconds and your kindle will go off rather than sleep french bookworm. Same to turn it on.

Oh thanks Suze, I have turned it off now. I think that could save me some battery life when I am not reading for long periods (when I have a paper book). Great :)

Clagg says:
Battery does not get used apart from when indexing, wi-fi is on or when turning the page. You can leave it on perfectly safely when going through airports.

I wonder how many No votes I get from my groupies for this post, which clearly does not add to the conversation. X

Never had any problem with my K4 and x-ray machines. I always have it on stand-by.

What I am wondering though, do you turn your Kindle off completly, do you put it on standby or do you just keep reading it during start off and landing. I've had several different experiences with the cabin crew on various flights, so I'm now a bit unsure what to do.

Bluestocking says:
All electronic articles should be switched off at take off and landing, not that Kindle could do any harm with the wifi switched off, but they ask you to do it. No need to switch right off, standby is OK.

Thanks for your answer.

I know that about the electronic equipment, alas I have been flying so much these past five years I might have flown just about engough for the rest of my life. However, newer phones have a flight mode which can be enabled. Hence they are allowed to be on throughout take off and landing, at least as far as I understand it. As the Kindle barely emits anything even when in reading mode, I never quiet get why I have to put it on standby.

Being a bit thick here, but have never really flown. Why does the wifi affect take off and landing. Is it something to do with the signal, or is it something else.

I always thought it messed around with them contacting the airports/navigation. But im not really sure how...

GlamSmile says:
I guess it has to do with the signal interference, but I'm never quiet sure on that one. I just recall this one time I remembre accidently leaving my phone on (no flight mode enabled) - I talked to one of the cabin crew telling them my dilema as they were doing final checks. Basically they told me not to bother and that it wouldn't really matter. Now I'm not sure whether this was just because it was one phone or because it doesn't really matter.

Recently I found my I phone lost 80% of its charge after passing through an airport scanner. This has happened twice now, otherwise the phone is fine. Anyone else noticed this?
