Smudger says:
My father has a Kindle, and I do not, so apologies if this is something obvious that I have missed. Can I buy a Kindle book as a gift for my father, if it is not on his wish list? i.e. as a surprise for birthday or Xmas

Denis Powell says:
Not in the UK, no. You'll find it more fully discussed in this recent thread:

Hiya Smudger,

As Denis says, you can't buy the book at the moment. You can, however, buy an Amazon gift card.

Ah that's a shame - I like shopping for gifts that I think people will like. I note it is possible on American Amazon, so maybe it will come here eventually

I am really upset by this. I Googled for information about gifting Kindle books and only when I came to order on the morning of the birthday did I discover that it only applies abroad. Why wasn't this clear that it was for foreigners only? Grrrrr.

I am sure you've heard the expression: You cant believe everything you read on the Internet.

From comments I've read on the American forums Amazon have nothing but problems with it with people returning a high percentage of the books as unwanted gifts. I would far rather get a voucher then I can get what I really want instead of pretending I like the book someone has bought for me. Also I should point out that as Amazon is an American company we in fact are the foreigners.

I would far rather have a book specially chosen for me than a gift card.

Denis Powell says:
I'm not eager for Kindle gifting to appear.

I have many paper books in my collection that were purchased as gifts by family and friends over the years. Some of them remain unread even after more than 50 years as they were never of any interest to me. Some I already owned. Only recently a friend purchased a book that I'm simply unable to read as the print is too small.

That doesn't negate your preferences, however, but I can see a significant proportion of gifts being rejected in favour of the Gift Card balance instead so that recipients can buy books of their own choice. That appears to happen on a regular basis in the US.

I find specially chosen books often tend to be those which I least want to read. There is only one person who I would trust to choose books I will enjoy and I've known her for nearly 50 years. In general I would rather choose my own.

CBRetriever says:
if it was my grandmother who'd done the choosing, I'll guarantee I wouldn't like it - the amount of religious stuff I got and never used (Jesus board games come to mind) was astounding (religious flash cards)

I'd probably have ended up with these if she was still alive and I was still a child:

The Action Bible Easter Story (Action Bible Series)
'Tween Girls and God -- Fruits of the Spirit
The Bible in 366 Days for Girls (eBook)
