Does anyone know how to recommend books for the Kindle Fire to Amazon? They are very slow to add British books by authors like Paul Macauley and Stephen Baxter.

In reply to an earlier post on 15 Jan 2014 14:29:09 GMT
Denis Powell says:
Amazon don't add them. It's up to the Copyright owners and/or publishers to make them available. It's those you'd have to petition.

Nowadays the physical and ebook get published at the same time, sometimes an ebook will get published first. Publishers are working on backlists published before ebooks existed but there are a lot of them and I suppose some are considered more worth their while than others. Also it could be the case that the publisher of the books don't have the electronic rights. It gets even more complicated if the author has changed publisher.

By Stephen Baxter, due on 24th Jan

Raft (Xeelee Book 1)
Timelike Infinity (Xeelee Book 2)
Ring (Xeelee Book 4)

Flux (Xeelee Book 3)

Little egret,
Xeelee is pretty old. What I want is Proxima. I'm going to talk to Steve about this since it seems the publisher is responsible for getting things on the Kindle. So the author is impacted by how slow the process is. This isn't just Baxter; all British books seem to be delayed for Kindle versions. Paul Macauley is another example.
Best,

CBRetriever says:
it's not just British books

I'm waiting on David Palmer's Emergence, Joyce Ballou Gregorian's Tredana Trilogy and Chad Oliver's books

as well as two British writers: Louise Cooper's Time Masters series and Jane Gaskell's Atlan series

I Readalot says:
I assume you are talking about .com as Proxima is available in both formats .co.uk and has been since September. Could be a copyright issue, maybe the publisher in the US don't own the e rights and so are unable to publish it as an ebook.

Nope.

Broken Homes (PC Peter Grant Book Book 4) by Ben Aaronovitch

Not yet available in the US I believe

CBRetriever says:
well, it is listed on amazon.com, but I may only see it as available since I'm in France

and I just saw yet another thread over there complaining about not being able to get David Edding's Belgariad series for the kindle - this is an American writer who has several books available to UK residents, but not US residents

Damaskcat says:
I read loads of British authors and I can't say I've noticed more delay with their books than any other nationality.

In reply to an earlier post on 17 Jan 2014 08:50:52 GMT
CBRetriever says:
the only delay I've noted is with translations being offered and that's usually on amazon.fr as the French version in paper of Patrick Rothfuss' Name of the Wind was available almost two years before a kindle version was available

In reply to an earlier post on 17 Jan 2014 08:55:06 GMT
Damaskcat says:
I have noticed that with more and more authors that the Kindle edition is available on the same day as the paper version and it is only if you want a paperback rather than a hardback that you have to wait a while.

I think what is taking the time is authors' back catalogues and I can understand why. On the other hand I have bought Kindle books which have been long out of print as paper books and which I never thought I'd be able to get.

joe miller says:
I don't really understand the problem because, as many of you have noted, there are many older more obscure works which are easily available. But I know from personal experience that works by Macauley and Baxter have been delayed from appearing as e-books for the Kindle through amazon.com for a year or more. If the publishers are at fault, the authors are losing money.

I have even tried getting kindle e-books through amazon.co.uk or whatever the url is. But that seems to be prevented.
Joe

I Readalot says:
That is pretty much the case from what I hear from reps. In most cases publishers now have the rights to both physical and ebooks from the start of the authors contract, with the backlist they may not own the e rights and will have to renegotiate with the author or sometimes with a previous publisher of the authors work for the backlist, it can get a bit complicated.

In reply to an earlier post on 17 Jan 2014 13:11:41 GMT
I Readalot says:
joe, the hold up could be to do with the negotiations for the e rights, for all anyone knows the author could be hanging onto them himself/herself or holding out for a better deal.

Damaskcat says:
It must be an absolute nightmare for some authors and publishers.

In reply to an earlier post on 17 Jan 2014 14:01:14 GMT
Damaskcat says:
If you live outside the UK you won't be able to buy e-books from the UK site.

The only people who know the answer are the publishers and authors.

All,
My concern is not "old" books, but new ones such as McAuley's In the Mouth of the Whale or Baxter's Proxima which have been out in print for a year or so. I just checked on my Fire today and they are still not available through amazon.com but I think both are on http://amazon.co.uk.

In the Mouth of the Whale [Kindle Edition]
Paul McAuley (Author)
Kindle Price: $8.87 includes VAT* & free international wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet

Note: I live in France and thus can get a lot of UK published books on amazon.com due to my Country Settings under my Manage Your Kindle page on amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Proxima-Stephen-Baxter-ebook/dp/B00E0JYS8M/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1389972299&sr=1-1&keywords=proxima+baxter
Proxima [Kindle Edition]
Stephen Baxter
Kindle Price: $12.29 includes VAT* & free international wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet

the point I'm trying to make is that the books are listed and are available on amazon.com (note the amazon.com in the link address), but your Country Setting is preventing you from finding or purchasing them

OK, so if I change my country setting then I should be able to get these. I will try that but I think there is still a problem concerning how slow it is to get such books if your country setting is US.

Thanks for the tip!

CBRetriever says:
it is but look at my example of the American writer David Eddings and the fact that certain of his books aren't available to US residents but are to UK residents. And the Louise Cooper books I want are available in German, but not in English and until recently Georges Simenon's books weren't available in French in France, but were available in Italian....

It's a big mess and btw, I don't work for Amazon, somehow the Kindle Forum Pro from the US kindle forums got attached to my French account and i can't get rid of it.
