We have a new, free software update available for Kindle (£89). The software update will be delivered automatically via Wi-Fi to your Kindle in the coming weeks.

New features in this update include:

- Improved reading font that is higher contrast and crisper so that you can enjoy a paper-like reading experience.
- Parental Controls now allow you to restrict access to the Experimental Web Browser, Archived Items and the Kindle Store.
- Support for books with complex layouts and formats with Kindle Format 8
- Support for children's books with Kindle Text Pop-Up and comic books with Kindle Panel View (a view that allows you to read a comic book panel by panel). Books that support these features will be available from the Kindle store over the next few weeks
- Dictionaries grouped into a system collection in Home and Archived Items called "Dictionaries" for better organization.
- On supported titles you will notice an improved table and image viewer that allows both panning and zooming.

We will be delivering this update over Wi-Fi in the coming weeks. Customers who prefer to receive the update immediately can manually download and install the software update from:

Does this mean that the gap between the Kindle £89 and the "Touch" has just lessened?

I always though all kindles gave a paper-like reading experience. That's the whole point of e ink isn't it.

I want a software update for the Touch which makes my home page like the one we saw in the review vid a few days ago.

Seems like they're not bothering with updates for the KK users :(

Denis Powell says:
Kelp, I suspect there will also be an update for the Touch that includes parental controls.

Suze, that may well be on it's way.

I hope so. I quite like the way the home page was laid out, or if it could be like the store where we can have book icons or tiny icons and a list as well. Suit me down to the ground that would.:-)

Does this explain why I've had to reset my Kindle 3 times today? Very annoying. It would be nice if we were asked to confirm the install rather than it proceeding without warning.

Tay says:
The Kindle updates itself in the background and doesn't interrupt your current action. This shouldn't have forced 3 restarts.

Denis Powell says:
Do you have the new firmware or not? If not then any problems you're having will be nothing to do with this update.

I've just updated my Kindle. I'm pleased that the parental controls are buried in the settings and YOU as the Kindle user have the choice to enable them. I was worried that they would be set as a default. There is also an aeroplane mode, which was on as a default after the restart - this is in fact the wireless off setting now.

So is this not for the Kindle Keyboard then?

In reply to an earlier post on 4 Jun 2012 21:12:24 BDT
Denis Powell says:
No, Jonnyboy, only the K4

I'm glad for parents that they now have a way of limiting what their children can see/do on the kindle. I hope that it works well, I can't check because I
don't have this version of the kindle.

Well my KK is working just fine so i still see no reason to change. Shame amazon don't seem to be updating KK anymore.

I agree Jonny

Mine too, and my spare. The new updates don't include anything that interests me.

In reply to an earlier post on 4 Jun 2012 23:41:35 BDT
Jonnyboy says:
I agree apart from perhaps the greater contrast issue that may make it a crisper read.

In reply to an earlier post on 4 Jun 2012 23:43:29 BDT
Brian says:
I wouldn't have thought K3 could get crisper
