Artur Ogloza says:
what about EPUB ?

In reply to an earlier post on 11 Jun 2012 23:12:50 BDT
Brian says:
Well , non- DRM epub files can be converted to mobi , Arthur , and then transferred to kindle.

Damaskcat says:
Amazon will even convert them for you if you e-mail them to your Kindle.

I'm fine just as it is. There are already so many places to get books in a suitable format that I don't need to look elsewhere too.

Sarah O says:
I automatically convert all my ebooks to .mobi since I find it the easiest format to work with. For the non-DRM books I have, if I spot any errors while reading I tend to open them in Calibre to change them myself. Makes future reading less stressful, but I am borderline OCD about organising like that.

I think the Kindle has more than enough format support to suit 99% of ebooks out there. And the formats it doesn't support (pdf and epub) are so easy to convert to a suitable format that the extra effort of adding them to the Kindle repertoire would be wasted

Brian says:
That's true, Damaskcat

Artur Ogloza says:
EPUB DRM books - what about those books ? Why it's not supported ??

In reply to an earlier post on 12 Jun 2012 14:44:56 BDT
Damaskcat says:
No they can't because of the DRM

I knew you'd say that :) - I was going along with it , for a laugh, and yes, I've got a weird sense of humour , at times.

Denis Powell says:
Artur, Amazon want you to buy your ebooks from them. There's no benefit to them in enabling ePub just so that Kindle owners can buy their books elsewhere.

In the last 20 months I've only found one ebook that was only available in ePub format. Every other book has been available from Amazon or from other retailers in .mobi format.

Library Lending is another matter but, again, Amazon want you to buy books and not borrow them.

Artur Ogloza says:
Hi Denis,
Maybe you right for English books, but it's quite different for Polish books. Most of them I'm not able to find for Kindle :-/

In reply to an earlier post on 13 Jun 2012 07:35:11 BDT
Denis Powell says:
Artur, as Amazon only act as agents for ebook sales I'm sure that if the Polish publishers offered Polish Language books to Amazon they'd be accepted. They already have nearly 600 available. Requesting that the publishers make their books available to Amazon is more likely to succeed than asking Amazon to enable you to buy books from elsewhere.

'Fraid not. Polish is not a language accepted by Amazon Kindle Publishing. See https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help?topicId=A9FDO0A3V0119 for details.

You missed the part where Denis has stated "they already have nearly 600 available". A quick search reveals quite a few books :

Maja (Polish Edition) or Olsnienie (Bass girl) - Polish Edition to name but a few hundred!

Denis Powell says:
Clagg, I did the "Look Inside" thing and assumed it was Polish. It's not one of the languages I'm familiar with, however, so I could be wrong. Perhaps Artur will check for me.

P.F. May, your post only relates to self-publishing, and that may simply be because Amazon don't yet have a reliable translation facility to check what the book contains. Books from reputable publishers probably cause no problems.

P. F. May says:
Denis Powell, you may be right and it would make sense, but that's what the KDP site says.

Clagg: Maja (Polish Edition) is obviously self-pubbed

That there are books online in languages not supported is certain, but authors are reporting that their books in non-supported languages that have been selling on the site for some time have been removed recently by Amazon.

Denis Powell says:
P.F. May, perhaps the KDP page is out of date. Self published ebooks often get removed by Amazon for poor formatting etc., so are the authors getting messages that the reason is because of the language used?
