Until recently my "Kindle for PC" would display and open any .mobi format book stored on my PC. Now, however, it displays only the titles I've purchased and downloaded from Amazon. How can I persuade it to recognize and open out-of-copyright mobi files downloaded from sites such as Project Gutenberg?

I have the latest version of Kindle for PC installed (v 1.9.1)

Incidentally, I find it annoying that when you install the program it doesn't offer you a choice of where it is to be placed. Not everyone wants everything installed by default on their C drive.

Hi
Not sure if this will help {I personally do not understand it but you may :0) }
Re: How do I get programs to auto install on a different drive

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can change the default directory by editing a registry key:

1. Go to Start -> Run
2. Type regedit
3. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
4. Find the entry ProgramFilesDir
5. Default value (under the Data column) of this entry should be C:\Program Files. Right click ProgramFilesDir, select Modify, and enter the path you want.

This should work on x86 versions of XP, Vista, and 7. x64 bit versions of 7 might be trickier.

Wintings, it still works for me but mine is still running version 1.7.1. It usually automatically updates so I don't do anything. When did you get the latest update?

In Kindle for PC, go to Tools, then options.
In Content you can change where the books are installed anyway.
I have no room for them on my C Drive, all books and games are stored on my external drive.

Hope that may help you, though I know it does not deal with the basic problem of being given a choice.

Oracle says:
Mine is fully up-to-date and works fine. Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing?

Thanks to all for the various suggestions. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program but to no avail. Only Amazon-sourced downloads are shown.
@Denis Powell: I got the latest update a few days ago. I was wondering if Amazon had doctored it so that only their downloads would be displayed but it seems from Oracle's comment that the new version works OK for him/her.
@ P A Brewer: Thanks for the instructions regarding the default installation location. I will try them but as I'm running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 it looks as if they may not work for me.

Any further suggestions would be much appreciated.

Aha, problem now solved! I have downloaded the VERY latest version (1.9.2) and it works fine. Non-Amazon titles are now displayed in the Library and can be read successfully. Must have been a problem with v1.9.1

Downloaded Kindle for PC Software and it seemed to load ok. Double clicked on Kindle Icon and it opened showing the books I had purchased and a couple of classics which I'm assuming were included by Amazon as freeb's. I could open the classics but, when I clicked on any of the new books the message came up that Windows had encountered a problem and would have to close and giving the option to send an error message to MS or not.
Amazon have tried to help but the info sent(which came back very quickly) was for Vista and 7 or 8, not the XP I run with.
I have emailed back asking for the help in XP but not had a reponse yet.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
