Lord Hoth says:
Hello

I've had my Kindle freeze up several times when I've tried to save (bookmark, whatever you call it) a note in a document. Usually, just sliding and holding the power switch for a short period of time solved that problem and returned it to normal.

Today, at some point, I checked my Kindle (I had read on it for an hour or so earlier on) and the screen is totally unresponsive -- it displays a screen-saver, with scattered lines and dots randomly about it (the picture is broken, not whole). I tried connecting to computer and restarting: the computer recognizes it perfectly (and all documents on it work as well), but the Kindle doesn't change in any way.

What should I do?

Cheers,

1. Put it on charge;
2. Take it out of any cover;
3. Slide and HOLD the power switch to the right for a slow count of 30.

Go away, make a cup of tea, paint the cat. (Leave it alone for 10 minutes to sort itself out after rebooting)

If all is not cured, contact ACS for a detailed response. CW

Clagg says:
15 seconds. That is all it takes to make it reboot. 15 seconds. not 30, not 50 as some have also quoted, but 15 seconds.

What was that again, Clagg?

@Clagg: You are totally correct that the timing is "flick" (sleep) ; 7 seconds (off); 15 seconds (reboot). However seconds are like man inches - they seem a lot longer than they really are.
Holding a little longer does no harm. Holding for not long enough and nothing happens.
Humm, let's not go there ...

Hmmh. Did try this -- computer recognized it okay, but the screen didn't change not immediately nor afterwards. Guess it is the customer support then ?

Customer Support are par excellance! There is a page on the help pages where you can ask cs to phone you it also allows you to say what the problem is so the right people phone. It is pretty immediate so have the phone to hand!

There are a couple of options I think, "Call me immediately" or "Call me in 5 minutes" - either way whichever you select that's what it will be, literally to the second :o)

Lord Hoth says:
Where is this "Call me" ?

I've only managed to find a "Call us" number.

Manage my kindle/Kindle Help/contact us

edit when you click the "call us" link it will take you to a page that offers you the chance to enter your phone number and they phone back
good luck

I think I got a new one coming (and Amazon Customer Service beats Royal Mail any time).

However, I am now a bit puzzled as to how I'm supposed to send the old one back. Is it just a RM Tracked mail then with the sticker on it that was sent to me, or are there any other options ?

When they replaced my evil non lit cover, they emailed me a free post label. I have noticed other posters with kindle problems have said that they were given a date by which the faulty one had to be returned. They normally send you an email detailing what they are going to do.

Yes, don't send the old one back until the new one has arrived; you will need it to help set up the new one, I believe.

Lord Hoth says:
Okay. They managed to deliver it today, which makes me need more help. :P

Firstly, do I need to send the power adapter and all that back along with the old one?

Secondly, is there a possibility that the problems were caused by the books I read (I had quite a few .pdf's on it, as well as books from Gutenberg and such)? The freezing problem did first come up when I tried to save (to that my notes) certain paragraphs.

If it isn't, can I just copy all of the contents of the old Kindle to the new one (and would that mean that the notes and such continue to work)?

Thanks,

volone says:
As I understand it, you do not need to return the charger/power adapter.

I have never used the highlights/notes facility so I can't answer that question, but I'll bet there's someone around here who can!

My first kindle screen went into split patterns, only parts of the screens showing, amazon promptly replaced this and everything was rosy, then the same again,am I lucky or what. What they did not tell me was this 2nd kindle did not have the original warranty for a further 1 months neither was it a new kindle, it was a refurbished one. Once I had spent about an hour on the phone to an operator, then the supervisor and the following day the manager, I was told basically, you are stuffed, either pay amazon 40 quid for a REFURBISHED kindle with a 3 month warranty or forget it. Damaskcat says:
You may not be happy but they are offering you a far better deal than most companies would. Since you don't seem to have much luck my advice would be buy a new one and take out the extended warranty.

Kindle support is a shambles
Despite growing numbers of people having screen problems (usually just after the warranty runs out) Amazon refuse to acknowledge there is a problem. All they seem interested in is selling me an overpriced second hand Kindle. On one hand they insist that Kindles cannot be repaired and on the other insist that the tat they are trying to sell me is 'refurbished' How does that work then.

If everyone that has a problem posts on the Facebook wall it may encourage them to sort this mess out

Damaskcat says:
There is no mess! Plenty of Kindles still around from nearly two years ago.

If you don't want to buy a new/refurbished one don't buy it! Refurbished in this case almost certainly means Kindles which have been sent back within the first thrity days because people changed their minds about them.

You're lucky you're being offered a cheap replacement - you wouldn't get that if it was a washing machine, TV, mobile phone etc.

Shouldn't you be contacting Amazon rather than the CAB? The books are not wasted you can read them on your computer, iPad, phone, tablet etc etc.

Jgee, you may find it more productive to speak to someone in your local Trading Standards department. They're the experts in these matters and may already have some experience with Kindle issues.
