Denis Powell says:
If you bought it from the US website there certainly was the option to buy with or without Special Offers and you selected the Special Offers version.

If you look at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007OZNZG0/ref=sa_menu_kdpclw you'll see just below the $119 box in the top centre of the screen, two smaller boxes. One quotes $119 for the "Special Offers" version and the other $139 for the "Without Special Offers" version. Alongside those is a link to explain how the "Special Offers" version differs. You opted to buy the version that displays ads on the Sleep screen and at the bottom of the Home screen. It was your choice.

US buyers who buy the lower priced version and then decide they don't like them have to pay to get the ads removed which seems perfectly fair to me. Contact Customer Services, explain that you made a mistake and didn't realise what you were buying and ask them if there's anything they can do for you.

It was made quite clear on the order screen. So, back to the question, did you read the instructions?

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Aug 2013 22:46:00 BDT
I bought it on the Amazon website in the US!! There was no mention of ads for a cheaper price and until the software update they weren't there. I think my long standing customer relationship with Amazon is about to end. That is a pretty poor business model from what I always thought was a remarkably responsible corporation.

Denis Powell says:
It sounds as if you have the "Special Offers" version of the Paperwhite. Did you buy it in the US? If so, it was a reduced price because of the ads. If you didn't want the ads you should have bought the full priced version.

If you bought it from Amazon UK then you shouldn't have the "Special Offers" version and need to contact Customer Services.

I have the wireless version of the paperwhite, in a case. When the cover is opened I now see a full page ad for some book or the other and "swipe to unlock.." Before the update turning off recommended content got rid of the ads. Now that switch has no effect. On the home page there are 3 book covers of my content, 4 book covers best books of the month and a banner ad at the bottom. I am a long time costumer of Amazon and Kindle and I am not happy about these ads.

Denis Powell says:
Philip, the Recommended Content doesn't appear as a full screen as but as a list of four suggestions along the bottom of the Home screen.

Did you buy your Paperwhite from Amazon UK or elsewhere and if the latter, did you buy the cheaper version that displays Special Offers?

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Aug 2013 19:55:06 BDT
Yes. And it was off by that method (settings, device options, personalize) and after the update it doesn't matter how the switch is set. When the kindle wakes up there is a full page ad for some book I am not interested in.

Denis Powell says:
The update shouldn't have affected the ability to turn off "Recommended Content" on the Home Screen. I had it off before the update and it stayed off, I didn't have to reset it.

When you say Settings, I assume you went to Settings, Device Options, Personalise your Kindle and Recommended Content.

If it hasn't worked I suggest you contact Customer Services or switch the Home screen to List View as they don't show in that view.

If you mean "Editor's Picks" on the Store page, you can't turn those off.

Yawn....
Home
Menu
Settings
Device options
Personalise your kindle
Recommended content off

There, wasn't that simple when you read and follow the instructions Amazon obviously waste their time producing.

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Aug 2013 18:53:10 BDT
I have recommended content turned off.
Have you read the instructions?

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Aug 2013 18:40:22 BDT
I did the update and now I cannot turn off "Recommended Content". This is most annoying advertising that I do not feel I should be subjected to. I have turned the switch to off in settings, restarted the Kindle and tryed different hot spots. Nothing turns it off. What am I doing wrong???

Yes my wife... heavy daily use since Christmas.
Absolutely no issues with it at all....

Only battery "problem" is when it indexes when it munches through the battery. mmm. three. all with battery problems...
How many books on it? How long before problem occurs? Six months (ish) or multiple thereof? If so then its indexing. Plug it in and leave it alone while it gets on with it. If you try to use it it just starts all over again from the beginning.
Or it's indexing and is stuck on one book and so never finiishes and munches the battery.

Dsisy, this is a thread about software updates. If you want the maximum number of people to see your post you would be better starting a new thread.

Personally, I've never had a battery issue with any Kindle, including the Paperwhite but as you've not said what your problem is it's impossible to offer any advice.

What problem have you had? Has it been the same on all three?

Kindle Fires are tablets and have the same screen as any other tablet therefore they are virtually impossible to read in bright sunlight. Kindle e-readers have e-ink screens - different technology - and can be read in bright sunlight.
