My wife will want a white kindle to match her macbook and yet I only see graphite on the UK website, where is the white version, or am I being veru foolish?

Sandee says:
Not foolish, you are right, only graphite version available in the UK at this time. I emailed customer services with the same question and here is the response:

"Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting

Kindle (Wi-Fi) and Kindle (Free 3G + Wi-Fi) is available in graphite and features the most advanced E-Ink screen on the market. The high-contrast display improves your reading experience by making text easier to read in all lighting conditions and making graphics appear sharper.

Currently, Kindle (Wi-Fi) and Kindle (Free 3G + Wi-Fi) white colour are unavailable with us at and we are unsure when it might be available.

However, I have sent your comments to the business team and they will update you once it becomes available. Each suggestion will be read and taken into consideration.

I appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thanks for your interest in Amazon Kindle."

Not really a reason for not providing the white one to Europe, but a response none the less!

Amazon have failed me:

Hello Tom,

The White version of the kindle is currently only available on the store.

Unfortunately there will not be a white version available on the store and you can't order it from the
US store as you will be redirected to the UK store

Please let me apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thank you for your interest in kindle.

Did I solve your problem?

Now how can Ann have a Kindle that matches her Macbook?

Bah, I'd have pre-ordered today if there was a white one :O(

A Reader says:
Might not solve your problem but I have heard from several reviewers that the Graphite, black or dark readers are easier to read from with their greater screen to edge-of-page contrast.

You can always get a skin to make it look lighter, if you like! Although, as Nick says, many folks find the contrast of dark edges with light pages to be easy on the eyes. My husband and I both have dark matte skins on our white kindles.

O. Reynolds says:
Well my personal reasoning for this is that it looks horrible and would get terribly dirty... Graphite looks much better!

A.Wiggin says:
I can see what you mean about contrast, especially if reading in the sunshine. I do like my toys to catch my eye when laying around ("please play with me!") - a skin would seem the way to go. Thanks all...

P. D. Birch says:
I have never understood why Amazon insist in discriminating against non US customers. It has taken years for the Kindle to come to the UK, however we are still unable to have all of the options available to US customers. Fortunately for me I am more than happy with the Black/Graphite Kindle and the new UK store. My predication is that a DX version of the new Kindle will be released in both the UK and US, maybe we will have colour choices with that.
If that doesn't happen Amazon still seem to be slowly releasing the Kindle around the world, hopefully we will have a colour choice and possibly a DX in the UK when the next generation of Kindle's are released.

Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology My wife would love a Kindle, we met someone who had a white one recently in the States. I know she would much prefer white to graphite so I am waiting until white is available in the U.K.

Alien Girl says:
Problem is, you could be waiting a very long time. The skins look great (saw someone with one on the train the other day) and there are plenty of "white" ones available.

Also, have you actually asked your wife? You say you know she would prefer white, but she might be ok with the graphite.

I would have bought my wife a Kindle for Christmas or her birthday (January) had it been available in white. She just doesn't like the look of graphite although I probably prefer it.

Damaskcat says:
so the colour is more important than the device itself? How sad.

essercizi says:
I recall a suggestion that Amazon deliberately dropped the white one because it emphasised that the screen is actually very pale grey rather than pure white.

Damaskcat - seems a bit harsh to me. Most people are very particular about the colour of their car and I don't see how electronic devices are different.

In reply to an earlier post on 11 Dec 2010 14:13:55 GMT
Damaskcat says:
No not harsh - why miss out on something so many people regard as fantastic just because you don't like the colour? Personally I'm not too bothered about the colour of a car - but then I don't own one myself.

Mr. A. Neil says:
I'd hate a white one ... It would make it look like one of those horrible Apple thingies, & I think the glare would be distracting.

However there are thousands of skins you can get from sites like Decalgirl, & they're customisable, so if you've no imagination at all you can get a plain white one :p

No of course the device is the most important but when you know it is available in different colours in other countries it is frustrating. Hence I am prepared to wait to see see if it will be available in white in the U.K. in the future.

Cate1976 says:
Definitely agree with the cantrasting colours between device and screen being important. First laptop my husband & I had was an apple iBook 3G and it was sometimes hard to read things at the edge of the screen. No problems with the laptops we've had since which have been darker colours for the casing, my iPod Classic is silver but has a black case. I'm hoping to get a Kindle within the next 6 months and will get a case for it that's dark enough to keep good contrast with the screen. If you really want white, then either wait and hope the Kindle does get released in white here in UK or buy a white case/skin for it.

I sometimes find it annoying when there's a huge delay between US & UK release dates, a few months- a year at most is ok but anymore than that is unacceptable to me.

I can never understand why they release white versions of this sort of product. White looks so cheap and tacky. I've no idea why apple in particular are so attached to the colour. It's always the least popular. When I got my iPhone and they asked me what colour I wanted, they laughed when I said black. The guy said he didn't know why they had to bother with the question, no-one ever wants the white one.
Mind you- if Kindle had only been available in white, I would have bought it anyway because it's the Kindle that I'm really interested in, not the colour. If there's a choice then fair enough, but when there isn't a choice, it seems ridiculous to me that someone would choose to miss out on a product that is apparently not going to be made available in the colour that they want.
If I wanted a particular car and it didn't come in the colour that I preferred would I refuse to buy it and instead go for a different car that I didn't want as much? No- of course not!

damaskcat and daisyduck1976 - on a personal level I'm struggling to disagree, as to my eyes I cannot get excited about white vs graphite, but if the colour was bad enough (purple, yellow) I might have been influenced. You're also making the assumption that every potential buyer holds the Kindle 3 in the same very high regard you (and I) do when for many the decision whether to buy will be marginal in which case 'trivial' things like colour matter much more.

I too want a white kindle, this is not the era of the Model T Ford - the only colour of Kindle you like as long as it's graphite? Hello!....come on Amazon this is 2011!

Posted on 6 Jan 2011 15:22:53 GMT
They might get other colours one day like the small ipods?

AndyBSG says:
The white Kindle is the Kindle 2, which has been replaced by the more advanced Kindle 3 Graphite version and there is also the Kindle DX which is more of a 'dirty' white colour and much larger than the Kindle 2 and 3, aimed more at people using them for Newspaper reading.

There are plenty of places out there that sell different protective 'skins' for Kindles and once you see some of the beautiful skins and artwork out there I doubt you'll be satisfied with a plain white one anyway.
