Is it possible to transfer books purchased on one kindle to another. I have a kindle and love it but would like to buy my husband one so we can swap books. Is this possible

Max says:
if both are tied to the same account then you can both read the same books.

Does that mean, you both sign into the same Amazon account? NAme your Kindle the same?

Max says:
the same account yes.

If you have seperate accounts then you can't share books.

You can give different names to your kindle's on the same account

@ E. Hollis

I have two Kindles reg to my account, one of them belonging to my OH.
Have had no problems getting books onto both.
Kindles have been given different names.

Haven't tried it but I think you have to go to the menu and de-sync them both ( if you are both reading the same book) otherwise last page read might be yours or it could be the OP's

Just to be clear: you cant TRANSFER books bought from Amazon from one Kindle to another.

What you can do is to have multiple Kindle's associated with one Amazon account. Then any book you buy can be down-loaded to 1 or other or both or all of the Kindles associated with that account. When you buy a book, there is a drop down to say which device (hence they will have different names) you want the book delivered to. All other Kindles on the same account will get notification of the book in their Archived Items folder.

To get the book onto a 2nd or other device, either you can click on it in your Archive, or go to Manage Your Kindle at, where you can specify to send the book to different Kindles.

If you are both going to read the same book at the same time, it would be sensible to turn off syncing last page read to Amazon - otherwise you might find it jumps forwards when you are not expecting it. Your individual Kindle will stilll remember where you have got to in the book.

It would be nice to be able to exchange files with any other device via Bluetooth. Ebooks and text files are white small, so it would work well with Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is pretty power-hungry though isn't it?

By the way, PA: What device are you using to type on? I was just interested in what corrected "quite" to "white"...

Like wifi, turn it off when it's not needed. (It's surprising how many young people just leave bluetooth enabled on their phones!)

Oh, pooh. It's an Android keyboard app. I think I might dump it and revert to the default.

I would have thought Android would have avoided "white"! That sounds more like an Apple thingy...

I think they tried to copyright the colour and register it as a trademark, but somehow failed ...

i would like to upgrade to a new kindle, can i delete from one kindle and install to a new one.

Suze says:
MP, yes. When you buy your new kindle, just make sure you register it to the same account as your current one. All your books will be in your archive to download when you're ready. If you're selling your current kindle, don't forget to de register it, otherwise whoever buys it has access to your account.

I want to buy a second Kindle in France from to get access to a full range of French e-books which I can't do with my British registered Kindle - is it then possible to switch content between the British and French registered Kindles? ie 2 separate accounts but both in my name.

In reply to an earlier post on 4 Jun 2012 07:08:55 BDT
Suze says:
No, you can't do this. To read each others books both kindles have to be registered to the same account.

I would like to give my Granddaughter my old kindle. I've bought a new kindle and registered it using my amazon account. How do I de-register my old one so that she does not have access to my account and books?

In reply to an earlier post on 9 May 2013 16:36:34 BDT
Denis Powell says:
You should restore it to Factory Defaults. That way it will be returned to its original unused state just as if it were new.

As you don't say which model you have I can only say that you'll find the option under Settings.

Gilks says:
Thank you. My old one is a basic kindle purchased approximately 2.5 years ago. I now have a kindle paperwhite.

Denis Powell says:
If it was that long ago I don't think it will be the Basic but the Keyboard Kindle.

Press Home, then Menu, select Settings, press Menu again and then select Restore to Factory Defaults.

Deregister it from your account and then your Granddaughter can register it to her account.
